Oct. 11 (Daily Mirror) - An appeal seeking to overturn the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan national Anojan Sivarasah was filed before the Saudi Supreme Court today (11), following joint efforts by Sri Lankan and Saudi legal teams.
Sivarasah was initially sentenced to five years in prison by a lower court over a social media post deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. However, the Saudi Court of Appeal subsequently overturned the original verdict and imposed the death penalty.
The appeal was prepared following several rounds of discussions between a specialised Sri Lankan legal team and Saudi lawyers. The negotiations were facilitated through the Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh under the coordination of Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia O.L. Ameer Ajwad.
The Sri Lankan legal delegation working to secure the reversal of Sivarasah's death sentence comprises President's Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma, President's Counsel Faiszer Musthapha and Additional Solicitor General Azad Navavi.
