The Nkerefi Development Association (NDA) has commended Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, for appointing three indigenes of the community as Special Assistants in his administration.
The appointees are Jude Egbonwonu, Special Assistant on Infrastructure Monitoring and Maintenance; Ifeanyi Onuora, Special Assistant on National Orientation; and Peter Nwaekemezie, Special Assistant on Market Orientation.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Chukwudi Okeke, the association said the appointments had brought joy to the community, describing them as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to inclusive governance and equitable representation.
“Our joy knows no bounds. This is a moment of pride for every son and daughter of Nkerefi. It is a clear sign that our community is seen, valued and counted in the unfolding story of a new Enugu,” the statement said.
The association noted that the appointments would strengthen the people’s sense of belonging and encourage greater participation in the development of the state.
“Governor Mbah has shown that no community is too remote to be recognised, and no group of citizens is too small to be heard,” it added.
The NDA also recalled that Mike Ogbuekwe recently made history as the first Nkerefi indigene to contest and win the chairmanship election in Nkanu East Local Government Area, attributing the development to the support of the governor.
It said the latest appointments were not the first time the Mbah administration had recognised the contributions of Nkerefi indigenes, listing other sons of the community occupying strategic positions in government.
They include Prof. G.O.C. Ajah, Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission; Hon. Chimaobi Okorie, Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development; Diamond Ani, Managing Director of the Community Service Development Agency; and Josh Ejeh, Special Assistant on Research and Publication.
According to the association, the appointments reflect sustained recognition of the competence and capacity of Nkerefi indigenes to contribute to the development of the state.
“Each of these appointments is a vote of confidence in the competence, character and capacity of our people. Taken together, they show a governor who listens, who recognises merit wherever it is found, and who understands that a state is built stronger when all its communities have a seat at the table,” the statement said.
While congratulating the new appointees, the association urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by discharging their responsibilities with integrity, humility and diligence.
“We charge our sons to remember at all times that they carry the name, hopes and reputation of Nkerefi. They must be diligent in their duties, loyal to the governor, faithful to the ideals of good governance, and mindful of the welfare of the ordinary people,” it said.
The association also called on members of the community to support the appointees with prayers, goodwill and constructive advice, while maintaining the unity that would promote further development.
It reaffirmed the community’s support for Mbah’s administration, pledging continued cooperation in the pursuit of peace, unity and sustainable development in Enugu State.
The NDA further thanked the governor for appointing Nkerefi indigenes to the Nkanu South Development Centre, describing the gesture as another opportunity for the community to contribute to governance and grassroots development.
“On behalf of the entire people of Nkerefi, at home and in the diaspora, we say a heartfelt thank you to His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. May God Almighty grant him wisdom, good health and abundant strength as he continues to lead Enugu State to greater heights,” the statement added.
