There was a time when a Week 7 loss would mean the end of a program’s championship hopes, that ugly “1” on the second half of their record more than enough to block any path forward. Those days are long gone, of course, and by the time the 24-team playoff rolls around, a regular-season loss won’t even dent the hopes of top programs. Which is too bad, really; the regular season’s importance continues to dwindle.
Thing is, even in a watered-down era, losses don’t just leave a mark on your record. The worst can leave a mark on your soul, staining the entire perception of a program, injecting doubt into the locker room and the stands. Long after the last warm days of October are a memory, some of these losses are going to haunt teams deep into December and beyond. Let’s run down seven Week 7 losses from least to most damaging:
7. Indiana to Ohio State: Annoying but manageable
Not an upset, but any time the undefeated No. 5 team and defending national champ loses, it’s notable. Just under a year ago, Indiana beat Penn State on a miraculous, last-minute, toe-tap touchdown. On Saturday, Indiana lost to Ohio State because of an almost-miraculous, last-second, toe-tap near-touchdown. When you lose to a fellow top-10 team by half the width of a shoe, well, it’s painful but not disastrous. Indiana will be just fine … unless the Hoosiers start thinking that the football gods that smiled on them in 2025 have forsaken them in 2026. (And Ohio State might have won the game, but the loss of Julian Sayin for the short term could make this a costly victory indeed.)
6. Memphis to Tulane: Playoff ending
Memphis was an outside pick to make the CFP, but its road there is now effectively nonexistent after a second loss on the season and a first in the American conference. Any school outside the Power 4 has a hair-thin margin for error even in the best-case scenario, and Memphis is not living a best-case scenario.
5. Oklahoma State to Houston: Momentum buster
This is one that would be worse in the 24-team playoff era, but since it’s an uphill road for either of these two to even make the playoff, this is a pride loss more than a postseason-projection one. Drew Mestemaker threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns, so his dark-horse Heisman campaign remains on track.
4. Georgia to Auburn: Mostly irrelevant
Probably more damaging for Dawg tailgaters, who had to make an unfamiliar walk of pain back to their SUVs. Georgia hadn’t lost a game at Sanford Stadium since 2019, meaning three entire classes of students never saw a loss at home. Poor babies. Anyway, this will have no meaningful impact on Georgia’s playoff hopes, but does introduce doubt about Gunner Stockton (three turnovers, including a crucial game-flipping fumble). Unlike the three upsets above it, Georgia can obliterate the memory of this loss by hitting its next couple SEC opponents with some vintage three-possession winning margins.

3. Notre Dame to BYU: Potentially problematic
Rough for the Irish, not only because it feeds into the ongoing perception that Notre Dame flails whenever it plays a respectable team, but because the Irish still have Miami on the schedule. Losing to the No. 8 team isn’t inherently dishonorable, particularly when missing out on a potential game-winning play. But when playoff rankings come around, critics point white-hot spotlights at any blemish on Notre Dame’s record — not without reason — and this obviously qualifies. A second could eliminate them from the postseason.
2. Alabama to Tennessee: Deeply damaging
This is one of those leave-a-bruise losses. The fact of Tennessee beating Alabama isn’t that big a deal in itself; the Vols have now won the last three Third Saturdays in October played in Knoxville. But Tennessee has reignited all those doubts about Alabama and Kalen DeBoer, particularly in road games. Keelon Russell looked mortal, the Alabama defense crumbled after a solid start, and the team as a whole looked overmatched. After starting the year strong, DeBoer and the Tide are right back in prove-it territory.
1. Texas to Florida: Absolutely catastrophic.
Texas has underachieved for years, and Saturday seemed like the culmination of decades of big talk and small action. Unable to move the ball against Florida’s generally woeful defense, unable to shut down a quarterback making his first college football start, unable once again to live up to its high preseason expectations, Texas is now in existential trouble. They pretty much need to win the national championship at this point to get out from under this cloud of doubt and disappointment they’ve generated over themselves.
