President Lee Jae-myung on the 16th appointed Park Dong-il, head of the industrial policy office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as vice minister of the ministry, and Shin Jin-chang, secretary general of the Financial Services Commission, as FSC vice chairman. Filling the vice-ministerial posts through internal promotions is seen as a move to ensure continuity in policy.
Presidential Office Senior Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung announced the appointments in a written briefing the same day. Park, a native of Jeonju in Jeonbuk Province, has served at the ministry as director general for materials, parts and equipment cooperation, director general of the nuclear power industry policy bureau and director general for manufacturing industry policy.
Kang described Park as "an industrial policy expert who has handled planning and coordination across industrial policy through key posts and gained broad experience in the field, including in fostering core manufacturing industries." She added that he "has steadily proven his capability, including by smoothly leading a public-private joint task force to carry out large-scale investment plans in the Chungcheong region." Park will "move quickly on policies that the public can feel, such as securing a decisive lead in future strategic industries and creating quality jobs through manufacturing innovation and region-led industrial transition," she said.
Shin, a native of Geumsan in South Chungcheong Province, has worked at the FSC as director general for structural improvement policy, director general of the financial industry bureau and director general of the financial policy bureau. Kang said Shin is "an economic official with deep insight into financial markets and the financial industry, who has demonstrated expertise across all areas — including stabilizing funding markets after the Middle East war, financial support for low- and middle-income households and small business owners, and real estate finance policy — based on strong drive and a feel for the field."
She added that Shin is "the right person to complete the shift toward productive finance that revives the economy, while leading warm and inclusive finance that saves people."
The two posts had been vacant after Moon Shin-hak, then vice minister of trade, industry and energy, was named senior presidential secretary for economic growth, and Kwon Dae-young, then FSC vice chairman, was tapped as first vice minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
