How Much Money Do Airbus A350 Pilots Earn In 2026?

Passionate about promoting aviation, the beauty of flight and the science behind it, Antonio is an avid reader of aviation magazines and books, and he loves visiting airshows all over the world, taking photos and writing about airplanes and helicopters as well. Same airplane. Same cockpit. Same 14-hour flight across the ocean. But the two Airbus A350 pilots at the controls can head home with paychecks so far apart that they might as well work in different professions. The jet, it turns out, has surprisingly little to do with the gap, and the real drivers are far less obvious than most people assume.

We will examine what A350 pilots earn in 2026, using Delta Air Lines as the clearest US example, since it operates the type and publishes its widebody pay scales through the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), according to the union’s contract history document. We look at captain and first officer rates, how flying hours turn those rates into annual income, the profit sharing and retirement money layered on top, how the totals compare with US and European benchmarks, and what could change after the contract becomes amendable at the end of 2026.

No Single Salary Exists For Airbus A350 Pilots

Pilots are paid by contract, not by aircraft type. An A350 captain at Delta, an A350 first officer at another carrier and a long-haul captain in Asia each work under a different labor agreement, with different rates, different seniority ladders, and different rules for counting flying time. The same title on the same jet can therefore mean very different money depending on whose logo is on the tail.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers earned a median of $232,140 in May 2025, while the lowest ten percent earned less than $106,710 and the highest ten percent earned more than $463,830. Commercial pilots, who fly charters, tours, and other unscheduled work, earned a median of just $123,220, which shows how far the airline seat itself moves the needle.

Delta’s agreement is a useful benchmark because its scale is public and its widebody group includes the A350. As CNBC reported, the four-year deal included 34% in total raises, and its last scheduled increase, 4 percent, took effect on January 1, 2026. That final step produced the rates below, so 2026 is the first year the pay scale reflects the full raise schedule. The contract’s hourly figures, however, do not answer the question readers actually ask: what does an A350 seat pay, rank by rank?

Delta’s 2026 Contract Sets A350 Pay By Rank And Seniority

Delta places the A350 with the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A330 and Boeing 767-400ER in one widebody pay band. In that band, Rotate Pilot reports that a captain earns $443.85 per hour in year one and $483.74 by year 12. A first officer starts at $125.52, the same entry rate as on every other Delta fleet, and reaches $330.44 by year 12. A year-12 captain’s hourly rate is about 46 percent higher than a year-12 first officer’s, a premium for command responsibility. Widebody seats also pay more than narrowbody ones: a year-12 captain on the Boeing 737-800 or Airbus A320 band earns $388.27 per hour, compared with $483.74 on the widebody band.

A shared band keeps career moves simple. We reported that pilots moving from the A330 to the A350 often find the newer jet instantly familiar, as detailed in Simple Flying’s cockpit comparison, so a Delta pilot can switch between them without changing pay group. The fleet is also growing: Delta signed an order for 15 more A350-900s in January 2026, which will lift its A350 fleet to 79 aircraft after delivery, according to TravelMole.

A first officer’s rate nearly doubles between year one and year two because the $125.52 entry rate applies to every Delta fleet, and the A350 advantage shows only once a pilot moves up the scale. Yet an hourly rate is not a salary, and the multiplier that turns one into the other is where pilots’ real incomes start to diverge.

Credited Hours Turn Hourly Rates Into Real Salaries

Hours are the multiplier. Delta’s contract guarantees at least 65 credited hours a month, or 780 a year, which puts a first-year first officer at about $97,906 even at the minimum, per Rotate Pilot. The BLS adds that airline pilots fly an average of 75 hours a month, about 900 a year, and spend roughly 150 more hours monthly on duties such as weather checks and flight planning. Because no two pilots credit identical hours, every annual figure in this article states its hours assumption instead of pretending a single salary exists.

Seniority shapes the outcome. The BLS notes that flight assignments follow seniority, so veterans bid for preferred routes and schedules. Widebody work is also demanding: as we previously explained, even with the autopilot engaged, A350 crews keep programming the flight management system for routing, winds, and approach preparation.

That workload explains why Delta pays more for widebody seats than for narrowbody ones, as Simple Flying covered in its look at a 14-hour A350 flight. Delta’s pilots also receive money that never appears on an hourly scale, which raises the next question: what else sits on top?

Profit Sharing And Retirement Money Add Another Layer

Profit sharing can add tens of thousands of dollars to a Delta pilot's annual compensation. On February 13, 2026, Delta paid out $1.3 billion for 2025, 8.9% of eligible annual earnings, according to Delta’s announcement. The payment continues a tradition dating back to 2007. Rotate Pilot lists a higher rate of 10.4% for the 2024 earnings payout, illustrating how the amount changes with the airline's financial performance. If the 2026 rate were applied to a year-12 widebody captain's $483,740 base flying pay, the resulting profit-sharing payment would be approximately $43,000. Delta's formula allocates ten percent of the first $2.5 billion in profit and 20% above that threshold, so the actual payout depends on company results and eligible earnings.

Retirement contributions add another substantial amount, though this money isn't immediately spendable income. Delta's direct 401(k) contribution rose from 17% to 18% of pay on January 1, 2026, per Rotate Pilot. If the full 18% applied to the same $483,740 base, the contribution would be about $87,000. These figures illustrate the potential value of Delta's widebody compensation package, which applies to its A350 pilots and pilots flying other aircraft in the same pay group. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that airline pilots may receive per diem while away from home, additional pay for international flights, and free or reduced-fare travel.

Taken together, base flying pay, profit sharing, and retirement contributions can push a senior Delta widebody captain's compensation package well beyond base salary alone. How does that compare with what pilots earn at other major airlines, particularly those operating the A350 outside the United States?

Senior Pilots Pay Sits Near The Top Of The Profession

Against the national picture, a senior Delta A350 captain is in rare territory. At 1,000 credited hours, a $483,740 base clears the BLS top-ten-percent threshold of $463,830. Even the $293,240 median for pilots in scheduled air transportation sits below a year-12 first officer’s $330,440, and a new first officer’s $125,520 is above the bottom-decile cutoff of $106,710. The BLS also reports that scheduled air transportation employs 88 percent of airline pilots, so a major carrier’s contract is the benchmark for most of the profession.

Outside the United States, the figures fall quickly.

Citing ERI data, Euronews reported that average airline pilot pay across 17 European countries ranged from €32,299 in Romania to €113,672 in Switzerland, with Germany near €106,000. These figures are not specific to A350 crews, but published airline packages for widebody pilots offer a more useful comparison. ERI data in the same report show that European pilots with more than eight years of experience often earn 60 to 80 percent more than colleagues with one to three years, echoing Delta's seniority ladder. German federal statistics, meanwhile, put median earnings as high as €342,072 in the most complex pilot roles. Military pilots face a similar gap: Simple Flying’s 2026 review of US military pilot salaries notes that commercial airlines and private aerospace employers usually pay more. That pipeline matters because Delta requires 1,500 hours of documented flight time, per Rotate Pilot, and the BLS says airline pilots typically need a bachelor’s degree plus commercial or military flying experience before they reach a widebody seat.

However, every figure above rests on a contract that becomes amendable on December 31, 2026. Will the next agreement widen the gap between the two cockpit seats, or finally begin to close it?

The Next Contract Will Decide Pay Beyond 2026

It is not the aircraft that decides the salary. Delta’s agreement becomes amendable on December 31, 2026, so no one can yet say what 2027 rates will look like, according to Rotate Pilot. The current agreement took effect on March 2, 2023, after pilots approved it. January’s 4 percent increase was the last scheduled step, and bargaining will open as Delta’s A350 captain seats multiply.

Fleet growth is the testable signal. Delta also has 20 A350-1000s on order, with deliveries starting in 2027, as TravelMole reported, on top of an Airbus fleet already above 500 aircraft and a backlog of roughly 200 more. The jet suits long-haul growth: the Airbus A350-900 measures about 219 feet (66.8 meters) long, spans 212 feet (64.75 meters), takes off at up to roughly 591,000 pounds (268,000 kg), and was designed for 8,100 nautical miles, about 9,300 miles (15,000 kilometers), according to SKYbrary’s aircraft data.

CEO Ed Bastian said the new aircraft would elevate Delta’s premium offerings. Delta was still hiring pilots as of October 3, 2026, according to Rotate Pilot, and the BLS projects about 16,400 airline and commercial pilot openings a year through 2035. The number to watch is not the hourly rate but how quickly a new hire climbs from $125.52 toward a captain’s seat at $443.85 or more, and whether the next contract speeds that climb or slows it.
