Call her Serena van der Woodsen.
Clad in Cavalli, Kim Kardashian evoked everyone’s favorite blond bombshell from the early 2000s young adult series, “Gossip Girl,” during the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore on Sunday, styling a half-up, half-down hairdo in her signature jet-black color.
Like the lead character, Kardashian’s hair was purposefully left untidy in pursuit of a care-free “It” girl — or, in this case, WAG — attitude. With two sections framing her face in the front, the back half of her head was teased and tangled into a little bouffant lift at the crown. Meanwhile, her ends were accented with subtle curls that folded below her chest and around her back.
A view of Kardashian from behind revealed how the top half of her hair was fastened with bobby pins that matched her inky color. The hair accessories blended effortlessly with her texture, folding between the body of her hair thanks to celebrity hair architect Igor Rosales. WWD has contacted Rosales for further details.
The style brought to mind one “Gossip Girl” episode in particular, in which Serena, played by Blake Lively, calls the paparazzi on herself to get her scheming father’s attention. If you aren’t familiar with this one, see the season three premiere episode.
Indeed, this wasn’t the only episode that featured the messy, minimalist hairstyle; the look was favored across the six-season show, which premiered in 2007, and seen on a slew of characters. Now, the anti-clean girl hair aesthetic is once again emerging in beauty, and just in time for the annual series rewatch. According to beauty booking platform Fresha, interest in “bouffant hair” has swelled 51 percent in the last year, with about 6,000 searches occurring this past month.
The way to achieve the hairdo is by focusing the volume at the crown of the head. “The hair has a rounded shape through the top, while the sides are swept back and the lengths stay loose. It gives you volume without having to wear a full updo,” said Danielle Louise, a featured hairstylist on the Fresha app, in an official statement. Louise also pointed out how Kardashian’s front pieces stop the style from appearing “too formal.”
“Which is a useful detail to copy for party hair,” she said.
