SUVA, 17 OCTOBER 2026 (PACNEWS/PIFS) — The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) are exploring closer cooperation to help Pacific countries prepare financially for climate shocks, including drought risks linked to El Niño.
The Forum Secretariat’s Economic Policy Team, led by Salaseini Raiwalui, recently met with PCRIC Chief Executive Officer Aholotu Palu and his team to discuss support for Forum Island Countries facing growing climate-related risks.
Discussions focused on PCRIC’s role in providing pre-arranged disaster risk financing, which helps countries access funds when eligible disasters occur.
With many Forum Island Countries facing potential drought risks associated with El Niño, the meeting examined how stronger collaboration between the two organisations could help governments prepare for climate shocks before they occur.
Pre-arranged disaster financing can help countries respond more quickly to emergencies, reduce pressure on government budgets and support recovery efforts following disasters.
The Forum Secretariat and PCRIC said they looked forward to continued cooperation to strengthen the financial resilience of the Blue Pacific region….PACNEWS
