Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. is now known by many NBA fans as a sharpshooter that rarely sees a shot that he feels that he shouldn't attempt throughout his career. Brooklyn brought Porter to the team two summers ago due in part to how he can contribute to the offense and it's worth knowing that the Nets have one of the better shooters in the league.
"Michael Porter Jr. isn't any worse of a shooter today than he was during his first few seasons, but he's a good case study for what happens when a player has to go from specialist to top option," Bleacher Report's NBA staff wrote on Porter. The outlet ranked Porter as the 20th-best shooter in the league heading into the 2026-27 campaign and it's easy to understand why.
"In his early days with the Denver Nuggets, MPJ had the good fortune of playing with Nikola Jokic. It's no wonder he became an elite catch-and-shoot weapon, hitting at least 39.5 percent of his threes in every healthy season with the Nuggets," Bleacher Report continued on Porter. "He peaked at a ridiculous 44.5 percent in 2020-21. Upon joining the Brooklyn Nets, Porter had to do a lot more self-creation. He excelled, averaging 24.2 points per game, but saw his efficiency slip in the process."
Porter, 28, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter entered his first season as the primary scorer for a team after spending his first seven seasons with the Denver Nuggets playing next to center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray.
Heading into the 2026-27 season, Porter will be playing next to forward Julius Randle, whom the Nets acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves via trade this past summer. While Porter's shooting numbers were down last season compared to his career averaged, Randle having the ball in his hands should make it easier for Porter to not only generate offense, but to get more open shots as well.
