Asterinas is the open-source project developing a Rust-based, memory-safe Linux alternative OS while striving for Linux software compatibility. Out now is Asterinas 0.19 as the project continues advancing on its goals.
The Asterinas 0.19 release has brought up an initial Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem and getting X.Org running atop the modesetting driver on this OS paired with Mesa's LLVMpipe OpenGL driver, which should provide for a better user experience than its prior legacy frame-buffer based experience.
Asterinas 0.19 also now has initial AArch64 architecture support to complement their existing x86_64, RISC-V, and LoongArch64 targets.
This open-source alternative OS has also been working to enhance its secure containers support, a Rust-native device model for drivers, and self-hosting for Asterinas building Asterinas. Asterinas has also introduced an AI code review mode.
