US-listed Ether exchange-traded funds posted heavier weekly withdrawals than their Bitcoin counterparts, even as BlackRock led a separate Friday pullback from Bitcoin products.
Spot Ether exchange-traded funds listed in the United States saw net outflows of about $320 million over the past week, according to CryptoBriefing. That figure outpaced withdrawals from Bitcoin ETFs during the same stretch, marking a notable shift in how investors are treating the two largest crypto fund categories.
The weekly Ether outflow figure stands out because Ether funds have generally drawn smaller flows, in either direction, than their Bitcoin peers since their US launch. A $320 million weekly withdrawal represents a meaningful share of the Ether ETF category's total assets, and it suggests institutional and retail holders are trimming exposure at a faster pace than seen in Bitcoin products.
Separately, NewsBTC reported that Bitcoin ETFs lost $82 million in a single Friday session, with BlackRock's fund leading that day's redemptions. The two data points describe different measurement windows, one weekly and one daily, so they are not directly comparable in scale. Taken together, they point to a broader pattern of net selling pressure across both major crypto ETF categories in recent sessions.
Spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs have become a central gauge of institutional sentiment since their respective US debuts. Bitcoin funds launched in January 2024, followed by Ether funds later that year, and both categories quickly attracted large pools of capital from asset managers, pension allocators, and brokerage platforms. Daily flow data from these products is now closely watched as a proxy for demand from investors who prefer regulated, exchange-traded exposure over direct custody of digital assets.
Outflows of this size do not necessarily signal a change in long-term conviction. Weekly and daily flow swings are common and often reflect short-term positioning, profit-taking, or reallocation between asset classes rather than a structural reassessment of crypto as an investment category. Still, when outflows persist across both Bitcoin and Ether products in the same period, market participants tend to read it as a sign of caution.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust has been the largest and most closely tracked fund in the category since launch, so its leading role in Friday's withdrawals carries added weight for market observers. Fund-level data from large issuers like BlackRock is often used as a bellwether for where the broader institutional flow trend is heading.
The relative size of Ether's weekly outflow compared with Bitcoin's is itself a point of interest. Ether ETFs have historically seen lower trading volumes and narrower investor participation than Bitcoin ETFs. A week in which Ether redemptions exceeded Bitcoin's raises questions about whether sentiment toward the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value is cooling faster than sentiment toward Bitcoin.
Market Impact
Sustained outflows from both Bitcoin and Ether ETFs can weigh on spot prices in the short term, since authorized participants typically sell underlying coins to meet redemption requests. A faster pace of withdrawals from Ether funds relative to Bitcoin funds may also widen the performance gap between the two assets if the trend continues.
For asset managers, including BlackRock, flow data is a key input for product strategy and marketing. Large one-day or one-week redemptions are watched closely by other issuers, brokers, and institutional allocators who use ETF flows as a real-time signal of demand across the crypto market.
Whether these outflows mark a short-lived pause or the start of a longer pullback will depend on flow data in the coming weeks across both Bitcoin and Ether ETF categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much did Ether ETFs lose in outflows over the week?
US spot Ether ETFs recorded net outflows of roughly $320 million over the past week, according to CryptoBriefing's reporting.
Did Bitcoin ETFs also see outflows?
Yes. NewsBTC reported Bitcoin ETFs lost $82 million in a single Friday session, with BlackRock's fund leading that day's withdrawals, though the weekly Ether figure was reported as larger than Bitcoin's outflows over the same stretch.
Why does BlackRock's role in Bitcoin ETF outflows matter?
BlackRock operates the largest spot Bitcoin ETF by assets, so its flow activity is often treated as an indicator of broader institutional sentiment toward the fund category.
Do ETF outflows mean investors are abandoning crypto?
Not necessarily. Weekly and daily flow swings are common and can reflect short-term repositioning rather than a lasting change in investor conviction toward Bitcoin or Ether.
