Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for new achievements on the country’s “new Long March” as China marked the 90th anniversary of the Red Army’s Long March victory at a gathering in Beijing on Thursday (22).
“Only by remembering history can we create a brighter future,” Xi said in his address at the Great Hall of the People.
Xi, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said the historic march had profound significance for the Party, the country and the military.
The Long March took place between October 1934 and October 1936, with the Red Army travelling through more than 10 provinces during a pivotal period in the Chinese revolution.
Xi stressed the importance of Party leadership, firm convictions and the support of the people, while calling for high-quality economic development, common prosperity and stronger efforts to balance development with security.
He also called for strengthening the armed forces and maintaining the Party’s leadership over the military.
Around 3,000 people attended the commemorative gathering. Senior CPC officials Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang and Li Xi, along with Vice President Han Zheng, were also present. Zhao presided over the event.
