The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, of engagement with environmental and public health authorities over concerns about an offensive odour and possible environmental impact following the aircraft accident in the area.
The Air Force said the assessment would be carried out after the completion of ongoing search and recovery operations.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15.
The NAF said it recognised the concerns raised by residents and was committed to addressing any environmental issues identified after the recovery exercise.
“The NAF recognises the discomfort, anxiety and uncertainty such circumstances may cause and assures the affected community that their concerns are being taken seriously,” the statement reads in part.
According to the statement, the Air Force is working with relevant partner agencies to ensure the safe and orderly recovery of the wreckage.
It added that the NAF would work with environmental and public health authorities, alongside other relevant agencies, to assess the situation and coordinate appropriate responses once the recovery operation is completed.
“Upon completion of the recovery operation, the NAF will engage with the appropriate environmental and public health authorities and other relevant agencies to assess the situation and coordinate appropriate action to address any identified environmental concerns,” the statement reads.
The Air Force further reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of residents affected by the incident, stressing the need for cooperation with relevant stakeholders to protect public health and safety.
“The NAF remains concerned about the wellbeing of the affected community and is committed to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are taken in the interest of public health, safety and environmental wellbeing,” it added.
