On Sept. 18, 2026, Utah Jazz starting point guard Keyonte George reportedly signed a five-year, $157.5 million rookie-contract extension. The franchise finally pulled the trigger, betting on their cornerstone piece to stick around for the long haul.
George averaged 23.6 points and 6.1 assists last season while shooting 45.6% from the field and 37.1% from three, all career bests. He did it in 54 games, starting every one of them.
He put up more than impressive numbers on a Jazz team that wasn't built to win. Opposing defenses focused heavily on him, often sending their best perimeter defender his way, and he still posted numbers that put him in All-Star conversations.
In his first two seasons, George shot roughly 39% from the field and 34% from three.
Defense remains a work in progress. Analysts have noted that he has inconsistent effort defensively, sometimes leading to missed rotations and avoiding contact at the rim.
George stands at 6 feet 4 inches and weighs 185 pounds. He does not have elite length or upper-body strength, which makes him struggle against big guards when attacking downhill. If George wants to silence the doubters, he'll have to stop giving up easy driving angles to the basket and cut ball handlers off.
However, last season's jump was well-earned. George stopped forcing the issue on offense and started picking his spots to attack. His shot selection got cleaner, he read defenses more quickly, and his playmaking grew without interfering with his scoring.
His extension averages $31.5 million a year and doesn't kick in until 2027-28. George only makes $6.6 million this season. Other guards like Bradley Beal, Jaden Hardy and Anfernee Simons will all make at least $6 million this season.
It isn't superstar money by any means. But for a 22-year-old who just proved he can carry the load for an offense, this is a number the Jazz can be proud of.
The timing means everything for the Jazz and their fan base. With Utah having their best roster on paper in years, they have their eyes set on making the playoffs.
When Utah saw Walker Kessler walk in this offseason, they knew they had to lock up George. By signing that extension, Utah avoids restricted free agency. They also have the luxury of neither a team option nor a player option attached to his contract, which keeps him around through the 2031-32 season.
Darryn Peterson arrives as the No. 2 pick in this year's NBA Draft, and Jaren Jackson Jr. gives the team a veteran presence on both ends of the floor.
George no longer has to be the No. 1 or two guy on offense. His usage may go down this season, but he will still have the ball in his hands every possession, creating for himself and his teammates.
With the entrance of Peterson and Jackson, he can be a third option on a team with real talent, which should help his efficiency. A bigger payday, a bigger role and a better cast of players around him set him up for a year where he'll prove he was worth every cent.
If his shooting numbers hold up and he improves his on-ball defense, the conversation about George changes. People will stop asking whether the Jazz should've paid him or not.
Over the next few months, he's going to make the Jazz front office look like geniuses.
