Four national and two state commissioners now await Senate screening. The presidential vote on Saturday, 16 January 2027 is about 13 weeks away.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to speed up INEC commissioner confirmation for six nominees to the national electoral commission. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced the names on Friday, 16 October.
The six are four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners for individual states. Tinubu cited the general elections due in January 2027 as the reason for urgency.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) organises every federal and state election in Nigeria. A fully staffed board matters about 13 weeks before the presidential vote on Saturday, 16 January 2027.
INEC Commissioner Confirmation: The Six Nominees
Professor Mustapha Aliu is nominated as national commissioner for the North West, replacing Professor Abdullahi Zuru. Bashir Muhammed Umar is nominated for the North Central, succeeding Professor Muhammad Adamu.
Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, now the resident electoral commissioner for Osun State, is nominated as national commissioner for the South West. She would replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on Saturday, 24 October.
Dr Bala Bila is renominated as national commissioner for the North East, so he continues in post rather than joining anew. Premium Times, Peoples Gazette and TheNigeriaLawyer name no predecessor for him.
Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, a retired permanent secretary, is nominated as resident electoral commissioner for Ekiti State. Zahradden Basiru Sanusi is nominated for Jigawa State, replacing Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
Who Does What at INEC
The four national commissioners are each named for a region, and the two resident commissioners for a single state. Resident electoral commissioners are INEC’s senior officials in individual states.
The explainer on how Nigeria’s INEC commissioner process works sets out how these posts are filled. This report covers only what the Presidency has announced so far.
INEC is led by chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who took office in October 2025 after Senate confirmation. The Senate will now scrutinise all six new nominees in the same way.
The Election Calendar Behind the Request
INEC issued a revised timetable in February 2026 after the Electoral Act 2026 replaced the 2022 law. It sets the presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, 16 January 2027.
Governorship and state assembly elections follow on Saturday, 6 February 2027. Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly races began on 19 August 2026.
INEC is already well into that calendar, having published a final governorship list in Gombe on 10 October. The report on the Gombe list that omitted Isa Pantami shows how closely the commission’s decisions are watched.
Tinubu’s request asks senators to treat the nominations as urgent rather than routine. The Presidency did not say when the Senate would begin or finish its review.
What It Means for US Readers
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, so US investors, lenders and diplomats follow how its January vote is organised. The staffing of INEC is one input into confidence in that vote.
The guide to who holds power in Nigeria explains the wider contest ahead of 16 January. This story concerns nominations only and carries no direct sanctions or trade consequence for US firms.
What Is Not Known
The Senate has not announced when it will screen the six nominees, and the Presidency gave no timetable. It is not yet known whether all six will be confirmed before Ajayi’s tenure ends on Saturday, 24 October.
The reports do not say whom Akinleye would replace in Ekiti or when Bila’s current term ends. They also give no length of term for the new appointees.
Whether any senator or party will oppose a nominee is unknown. No objection to any nominee appears in the coverage reviewed for this report.
What Comes Next
The next step is Senate screening, which the Presidency said will cover every nominee. A confirmation vote would clear them to join the commission.
The first fixed date is Saturday, 24 October, when Ajayi’s tenure ends. The next is Saturday, 16 January 2027, the presidential and National Assembly vote.
Nomination is not confirmation, and none of the six has yet been screened. Until the Senate acts, the nominees hold no seat on the commission.
