JOHANNESBURG, Oct 24: South Africa’s emphatic innings-and-31-run victory over Australia in the second Test at Gqeberha has intensified the race for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, offering India renewed hope of securing a place in next year’s summit clash at The Oval in London.
Australia remain at the top of the standings despite the defeat, but their failure to extend their lead has given the chasing teams an opportunity to close the gap. India, currently fifth in the table, will need a strong finish to their remaining fixtures, alongside favourable results elsewhere, to keep their qualification hopes alive.
According to the latest standings, Australia lead the table with a points percentage (PCT) of 75.00, followed by New Zealand at 72.22 and South Africa at 66.67. Bangladesh occupy fourth place, while India are positioned fifth.
South Africa’s victory has made the competition more open by preventing Australia from strengthening their position at the top. However, the defending contenders still have considerable ground to cover if they are to secure a place in the final.
India have seven Tests remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle, with two matches against New Zealand followed by a five-Test home series against Australia. Those fixtures will be decisive in determining whether the Indian team can make a late push towards qualification.
To reach a points percentage of 60, India need to collect 62 points from their remaining seven matches. That leaves little room for error, with the team unable to afford more than two defeats if they are to achieve the target.
A points percentage of 60, however, would not necessarily guarantee a place in the final. India will also need at least two among Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to drop points in their remaining fixtures.
The results of the upcoming series involving these teams could therefore prove just as important as India’s own performances. While victories against New Zealand and Australia would significantly improve India’s position, dropped points by their rivals would offer an additional boost.
India’s immediate challenge will be to produce consistent performances across both series. The two Tests against New Zealand will provide an early opportunity to accumulate valuable points before the much-anticipated five-match contest against Australia on home soil.
The series against Australia could be particularly significant, given the teams’ positions in the standings and the number of points available. India will need to capitalise on home conditions and avoid the costly setbacks that could undermine their qualification campaign.
Bangladesh also remain in contention for a place in the final. Currently fourth, they have six Tests left in the cycle, four of which will be played at home. Their remaining fixtures offer an opportunity to strengthen their position, although they too will need to maintain consistency and depend partly on results involving other contenders.
South Africa, meanwhile, have strengthened their own credentials with the comprehensive victory over Australia. Their position in third place keeps them firmly in the race, while New Zealand’s second-place standing means they cannot be overlooked in the qualification equation.
With several crucial matches still to come, the WTC standings remain far from settled. Australia’s defeat has prevented them from moving further ahead, but India cannot rely solely on their rivals slipping up.
For India, the route to The Oval remains challenging. They must win consistently in their remaining seven Tests, minimise mistakes and hope that the teams above them surrender valuable points.
South Africa’s victory has kept the door open, but India will have to make the most of the opportunity if they are to reach another World Test Championship final. (Agencies)
