The DRM Rust changes targeting the Linux 7.4 merge window have been submitted for pulling into DRM-Next ahead of that cycle kicking off (hopefully) next week. The NVIDIA Nova driver continues leading the way for the development of in-kernel Rust GPU drivers and in the process building out the Rust Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) infrastructure.
The DRM Rust changes for Linux 7.4 are predominantly made up of Nova driver changes and the infrastructure work needed for supporting its new features. There are also some fixes to Tyr as that experimental Rust driver for Arm Mali hardware.
The Nova driver for Linux 7.4 is seeing the introduction of "NovaCoreApi" for use by child drivers. There is also a new information reporting ioctl for indicating the GPU architecture / chip ID / vRAM details / etc to user-space. The Nova driver also adds VRAM buddy allocation, TLB flushing, MMU v2/v3 page-table types, and other memory management work. As part of that is also CPU access to mapped vRAM through BAR1.
The Nova driver also has error reporting improvements, new self tests, firmware handling updates, and various other low-level changes with this NVIDIA Rust open-source driver continuing to be built out.
Those wishing to learn more about these Rust DRM changes coming for Linux 7.4 can see this pull request for all the patches included. For those not up to speed on this future NVIDIA Linux driver once baked, there was a great Nova presentation at LPC 2026 last week in Prague.
