No fewer than 20 people, including security operatives, have been killed after gunmen ambushed a convoy of traders under military escort in Zamfara state.
The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. Saturday when the traders were travelling from Gwashi to Nasarawa market in Bukkuyum local government area, Reuters reported.
A resident of the area, Musa Danladi, who said he participated in evacuating the corpses, told Reuters that four soldiers, three policemen and one personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were among those killed, alongside 12 civilians.
A military source confirmed the attack, disclosing that 19 other persons sustained injuries.
The latest attack adds to the wave of killings and abductions recorded in recent months in Zamfara, heightening fears over the safety of residents and travellers in the state.
It would be recalled that last week, terrorists reportedly killed 19 security personnel and five civilians in Bindin village under Maru Local Government Area of the state.
