Travis Kelce's $5.35 million Ohio mansion has become the centre of an increasingly complicated neighbourhood dispute, with plans to improve privacy around the property running into fresh objections from local residents.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end purchased the historic lakeside estate in Bratenahl, near Cleveland, in March 2026.

However, the property's outdoor renovations have proved more difficult than expected, as officials and neighbours continue to raise concerns about the proposed landscaping.
The latest setback came when Bratenahl's Architectural Review Board declined to approve the proposed trees for the rear of the property, citing restrictions on their eventual height.
Although parts of the renovation have received approval, Kelce and Swift's plans remain unfinished, with a revised landscaping proposal required before the remaining work can progress.
The disagreement highlights the challenge of balancing the couple's desire for additional privacy with the interests of residents who have lived in the area for decades.
Neighbours have raised concerns about losing views of Lake Erie, the potential removal of existing trees and the possible impact of new planting on shared underground infrastructure.
According to local broadcaster Cleveland 19, the review board has indicated that plants used for screening in the affected area must comply with a 10-foot height restriction at maturity.
Representatives for the construction company working on the property acknowledged confusion over the rules and said they were willing to revise the plans to meet the requirements.
Why the mansion's landscaping plans have become controversial
The dispute extends beyond the appearance of the grounds. One of the most significant concerns involves an old sewer line shared with neighbouring properties, which residents fear could be damaged by the roots of newly planted evergreen trees.
Katherine Bolton, who lives next to the estate, told Cleveland 19 that she was worried about the long-term consequences of planting trees close to the existing pipe.
“When you plant that many trees from a short distance from a sewer line, you’re going to have a problem in the future,” Bolton said.
Bolton explained that her objection was not necessarily to the presence of trees but to the possibility of expensive repairs if the sewer infrastructure were compromised.
She also urged the parties to find a solution that would allow the owners to improve their privacy without creating problems for neighbouring homes.
The landscaping disagreement follows an earlier dispute over fencing around the property. The proposed fence was intended to make the estate more private, but residents questioned how the changes might affect lake views and the established character of the neighbourhood.
Local reporting indicates that the review board approved the fence proposal, which was set to sit inside the property's boundary, while requiring the landscaping plans to be considered separately.
The approval of one part of the project has therefore not cleared the way for every proposed improvement.
Kelce and Swift's construction team has also made adjustments in response to concerns raised during the process. However, the remaining disagreements mean the couple still needs to navigate local planning requirements before completing the outdoor work.
The next review of the revised landscaping plan is scheduled for November 10, according to Cleveland 19's reporting. Officials have indicated that they want to see a proposal that meets the village's requirements while addressing the outstanding questions about tree height and planting.
The property itself is a substantial investment. Situated on approximately 3.5 acres beside Lake Erie, the historic residence was built in 1895 and measures around 21,000 square feet.
It has eight bedrooms, a swimming pool, a five-car garage and a separate guest cottage. Its former ballroom has also been converted into a game room and home theatre.
The purchase has attracted attention partly because of Kelce's connection to the Cleveland area, where he grew up, and partly because of his relationship with global music star Swift. The couple's property decisions have consequently received scrutiny well beyond the small community in which the mansion sits.
Nevertheless, the central issue remains a local planning matter rather than a dispute over the purchase itself.
The owners are entitled to seek improvements to their property, but proposed changes must also comply with village regulations and take account of their potential effects on surrounding homes.
For now, the mansion's landscaping remains an unresolved project. Whether the next submission satisfies the review board and addresses neighbours' concerns will determine how quickly Kelce and Swift can move forward with their plans for the Ohio estate.
