The Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower for a third consecutive session on 21 October 2026, although the ASPI showed intermittent signs of buying support around the session lows.
The ASPI declined 56.48 points, or 0.28%, to 19,927.30, while the S&P SL20 fell 24.60 points, or 0.43%, to 5,656.91. The ASPI briefly moved above the 20,000 psychological level during early trading before selling pressure strengthened, with the index later recovering partially from an intraday low near 19,910.
Market turnover improved to LKR 1.46 billion, with 65.25 million shares traded. The Consumer Services sector dominated activity with approximately LKR 738.50 million in turnover, largely driven by Fortress Resorts, which generated LKR 730.10 million.
Crossings accounted for a significant 59% of total equity turnover. Fortress Resorts dominated block activity with approximately LKR 729.69 million, while Sampath Bank, Hatton National Bank, CHL.N and John Keells Holdings also recorded notable transactions.
Market breadth remained negative, with 58 gainers against 131 decliners, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.44. Foreign activity was broadly neutral, with a marginal net outflow of approximately LKR 1.04 million.
Commercial Bank was the largest negative contributor to the ASPI, followed by Carson Cumberbatch, CIC Holdings, Dialog Axiata and LAMB.N. Distilleries provided the strongest positive contribution.
While turnover improved, the heavy concentration in Fortress Resorts crossings indicates that underlying secondary-market participation remained relatively subdued. The ASPI continues to consolidate just below 20,000, making a sustained move back above this level, together with stronger market breadth, an important signal for any improvement in near-term momentum.
