With Manchester City under the microscope for alleged irregularities with their finances, many have wondered whether their sister club, New York City FC, will face the same fate.
Manchester City are appealing the Premier League’s investigation into their financial investment over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018.
But will this alleged irregularity affect other teams owned by City Ownership Group, the holding company that owns Manchester City?
MLS Commissioner confirms no investigation into New York City FC over Manchester City issues
Speaking to Front Office Sports, MLS Commissioner Don Garber was asked about the possibility of looking into New York City FC for possible financial irregularities.
Garber suggested that they have no plans to pursue an investigation against New York City FC just because of their ownership’s ties to Manchester City.
“We’re not in the business of looking [at] what our team owners do in other leagues. And frankly, I don’t think any league would view what other owners do when they have multiple investments throughout other sports.”
Garber gave a measured response to what is quite a delicate matter. Just because Manchester City are under investigation for alleged financial misrepresentation does not by any means implicate New York City FC in having done the same.
Furthermore, New York City FC haven’t received anywhere close to the financial investment into their squad over the same time period as Manchester City.
Therefore, with no grounds to conduct an investigation into the matter, MLS officials have deemed any potential investigation into New York City FC unnecessary.
Manchester City are planning to appeal all the counts they’ve been found guilty of, with the appellate process expected to take a very long time.
For what it’s worth, New York City FC wouldn’t be facing the same level of punitive damages that Manchester City are, primarily because their level of success over recent years doesn’t come close to the success their English partner club have experienced.
