On Oct. 11 local time, Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that "an energy ceasefire has been reached in the war between Russia and Ukraine," adding that "it takes effect immediately."
He said "both sides have agreed," and urged them: "Do not violate it."
The "energy ceasefire" Trump referred to is understood to mean that Russia and Ukraine will halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure, including power plants and oil refineries.
However, details such as the specific range of facilities covered, the duration, and how compliance would be verified were not disclosed. As of immediately after the announcement, neither the Russian nor the Ukrainian government had issued separate official confirmation.
Russia and Ukraine have continued attacks targeting each other's energy infrastructure, including power plants, electricity grids and oil refineries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier said Ukraine was prepared to stop striking Russian refineries if Russia halted its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.
Trump has recently cited rising energy prices in pressing Ukraine to stop attacking Russian refineries. Attention now turns to how far the announcement will be implemented on the ground.
