Louisiana's historic Lincoln Theater set to reopen Oct 29 after restoration

Baton Rouge’s historic Lincoln Theater is finally ready to welcome the public again. First opened in 1949, the landmark hosted legendary Black performers during segregation and became an important meeting place during the 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycott.

After more than a decade of restoration work and a $4 million investment, the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community open house on October 29 to mark its reopening, according to WBRZ and 225 Baton Rouge.

A theatre with deep history

The Lincoln Theater opened in 1949 in South Baton Rouge, then a thriving middle-class Black neighbourhood. During segregation, it served as a premier entertainment venue for Black residents, offering both films and live performances.

Its stage welcomed major artists including James Brown, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and Lionel Hampton. For families in the area, the theatre was also a familiar place for movies, community gatherings and shared cultural life.

The building was more than an entertainment venue. It housed a deli, barbershop, pharmacy and offices, spaces that became connected to civil rights organising in Baton Rouge.

A role in the bus boycott

The Lincoln Theater played a significant role in the 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycott, one of the early and influential actions of the Civil Rights movement.

Rev T J Jemison, a leader of the boycott, used the theatre complex as a key meeting site. The venue also hosted a meeting between Jemison and Dr Martin Luther King Jr. King later used elements of the Baton Rouge boycott model in the Birmingham campaign, which began in 1956, as per the reports. That history has made the theatre an important part of Baton Rouge’s civil rights memory. Its restoration is therefore seen not only as the revival of a performance space, but as the preservation of a place where community organising and cultural life came together.

More than a decade of restoration

The theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, but by then the building had fallen into serious disrepair. Volunteers led by Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame founder Brenda Perry Dunn worked for more than a decade to raise funds and push the project forward despite slow fundraising, construction delays and rising costs. The restoration has involved a $4 million investment. The work includes a restored theatre space, an expanded east wing and a new home for the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame Museum and Cultural Center.Organisers have tried to retain the character of the original building wherever possible. New exterior windows were made by the same manufacturer as the originals, while the historic terrazzo floor tile has been preserved and matched with a new 17-foot tile entryway.

Restoring the details

The theatre’s interior has also been carefully updated. Fresh stage curtains carry the same embroidered script “L” as their predecessors, while paint and chair colours were chosen to reflect the venue’s earlier design.Visitors to earlier progress events saw a nearly completed concession area, green room and two-storey museum and cultural centre. The restored auditorium includes an expanded stage, modern lighting and crimson upholstered seats in the orchestra section. One of the most anticipated features is the replica neon marquee. Board member Michael Domingue said the new sign was designed to look like the original and that, once installed, it would light up the whole block.

What the reopening will offer

According to WBRZ, the October 29 event will run from 5:30 pm to 7 pm at 1305 Myrtle Walk Street and will also commemorate the theatre’s 77th anniversary. Attendees will be able to preview the updated facility, including the restored theatre, expanded community areas and the new museum. The Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame Board of Directors said the project represents an investment in preserving history while creating opportunities for education, cultural enrichment and community engagement.

The museum is expected to feature kiosks with rotating subjects, including former Lincoln performers, civil rights leaders, politicians, educators and business leaders.Theatre programming will be run by UpStage Theatre, a Baton Rouge organisation founded in 2002. Plans include staged productions, films and educational programmes for children and young people.

A landmark returns

For longtime residents, the reopening carries personal meaning.

Former state representative Patricia Haynes Smith, who grew up nearby and attended movies at the Lincoln as a young person, compared the theatre’s revival to a phoenix rising from the ashes. The project has taken years of patience, fundraising and volunteer effort, but it now stands as an example of how historic preservation can protect both architecture and community memory. The Lincoln Theater’s return will give Baton Rouge a restored cultural venue, a civil rights landmark and a museum dedicated to Black history in one place.
