Chile Police Check 2,055 Foreigners in Sweep

CHILE · MIGRATION

Chile‘s investigations police, known as the PDI, checked 2,055 foreign nationals in a two-day sweep across the country and found 347 in irregular immigration status. The operation ran on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October 2026 and covered all 16 regions.

It matters to US readers because Chile, a copper exporter, is moving toward faster expulsions. The sweep coincided with votes in Congress on a law that lets police enter homes, with judicial authorisation, to carry out expulsion orders.

The Operation in Numbers

PDI Director General Eduardo Cerna presented the results on Wednesday 21 October. Of the 347 people identified, 139 had entered through unauthorised border crossings and 208 were classed as other violations and crimes, according to Meganoticias.

Officers detained 39 people who already had expulsion orders that could be carried out, and notified 27 others of expulsion decisions. Press reports put the deployment at more than 1,100 detectives and about 300 vehicles, while CNN Chile cited over 1,500 officers.

Who Was Identified

Venezuelans were the largest group, with 223 of the 347 people. The rest were 40 Colombians, seven Peruvians and 77 people of other nationalities.

Press reports differ in wording, with Meganoticias calling the 347 detained while other outlets say they were identified in irregular status. Cerna said the operation will continue, with the timing kept confidential, according to CNN Chile.

The Law Behind the Sweep

Chile’s Chamber of Deputies voted on Monday 19 October and the Senate on Tuesday 20 October on a bill on administrative expulsions, and Minister Arrau said Congress had just approved it, according to Meganoticias. We covered the final vote in an earlier report on how the expulsion law cleared Congress.

The bill allows police to enter a home to carry out an expulsion, but only with prior judicial authorisation. It also lengthens the ban on returning to Chile for expelled people from three to five years.

Government Claims and Limits

Minister Arrau said irregular entries had fallen 80% this year, according to Radio Universidad de Chile. That figure is the government’s own claim, and we have not seen the underlying data.

Cooperativa, a Chilean radio network, reported that expulsions of Venezuelans remain stalled because Caracas refuses to accept return flights. That may limit how fast the 39 detainees can be removed.

What It Means for You

For US readers, Chile offers a close comparison with American debates on deportation, home entry and enforcement sweeps. The practical test will be whether expulsions actually happen, especially for Venezuelans.

Travellers and investors should expect more identity checks in Chile. Chile’s stable economy makes its migration policy a useful signal for the wider region.

What Is Not Known

Reports do not say how many of the 347 people will be expelled, or when the 39 detainees will be removed. The PDI has not said how many of the 347 face criminal charges.

Cerna’s figures have not been independently verified, and reports differ on how many officers took part. We found no statements from migrant-rights groups, opposition parties or courts on the sweep.
