Kimberly Guilfoyle has been asked to resign.
President Donald Trump has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece, White House new press secretary Katie Zacharia announced in her first press conference today.
This came amid several allegations of abuse of power against Guilfoyle who was engaged to Donald Trump Jr for years."She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well," Zacharia said. The allegations, reported exclusively by The Wall Street Journal, concern both Guilfoyle's conduct before her confirmation as ambassador and her tenure in Athens. Her lawyers have denied wrongdoing, saying a disputed payment request related to unpaid fees for earlier public appearances and speaking engagements rather than her diplomatic position.
$100,000 credit card bill and alleged promise of access
One of the most serious allegations concerns businessman Eric Deters, a Trump supporter and donor who said Guilfoyle asked him to pay a $100,000 American Express bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025.According to messages provided by Deters to news organizations, Guilfoyle allegedly urged him to transfer the money directly to the credit card company. One message reportedly said that the payment would not show up anywhere if sent directly to American Express.
Deters alleged that Guilfoyle offered to help him gain access to senior officials in the Trump administration in return for the payment. He described the arrangement as a quid pro quo. He told NBC News that she had indicated he could ask her for virtually anything within the Trump administration. The messages were reportedly exchanged shortly before her July 9, 2025, confirmation hearing. Deters said he did not pay the money.Guilfoyle's lawyers disputed the allegations, arguing that the money concerned fees for speaking engagements and public appearances that predated her nomination. The controversy prompted the State Department's Office of Inspector General to investigate Guilfoyle and the US embassy in Greece, according to NBC News.
Alleged threat involving the Greek government
A separate report by The Wall Street Journal alleged that Guilfoyle told guests at a reception that the United States could undermine the Greek government if it chose to do so.The report also raised questions about her interactions with Greek business interests. She was accused of promoting the interests of a particular Greek construction and energy company and allowing its lobbyist to attend private diplomatic meetings. These allegations have raised concerns about whether private commercial interests were being given inappropriate access to diplomatic channels. The reported accounts have not, by themselves, established that Guilfoyle violated any law or diplomatic rule.
Luxury travel and gifts from business interests
Guilfoyle has also faced questions over alleged gifts, services and luxury travel involving business figures. A Wall Street Journal report described her frustration at being excluded from a Greek-themed event organised during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this year.According to the reporting, Guilfoyle demanded to attend the event and spoke about luxury trips to France with energy company executives.
The broader allegations have raised questions about whether benefits provided by private business interests were appropriate for a serving US ambassador.Separately, reports have described tensions between Guilfoyle and staff at the US embassy in Athens over her leadership and conduct. The State Department watchdog's investigation is examining concerns involving Guilfoyle and the embassy, although the department has not publicly confirmed the details of the inquiry.

The controversy has put the administration in a tough spot as she has not only been an envoy but also a part of the Trump family for years. Guilfoyle's relationship with Don Jr ended in 2024, and Don Jr later married Bettina Anderson in May 2026.A former Fox News host, Guilfoyle was earlier married to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
