A series of intimate videos circulating on WhatsApp, featuring well-known figures engaged in sexual encounters, has caused disquiet here in Tirana. The scandal exposed a disturbing pattern involving both prominent and lesser-known singers and actresses who had allegedly been filmed in secret at the studio of Adrian Hila, a composer regarded as influential enough to shape or derail careers.
On September 30, the footage appeared online and, despite being quickly removed, continued to circulate across social media platforms and messaging apps. Reports suggest the recordings were captured using hidden cameras, without the knowledge or consent of those filmed. As the scandal widened, there were indications that about 17 performers and other public figures, both women and men, may have been affected.
Public opinion turned into persecution, with social media acting as judge and jury, publicly crucifying the women involved. Albania is still not ready to acknowledge women as sexual beings, and the scandal was largely approached through a moralistic lens.
