- Can handle off-road tasks with ease, charming vintage design, high utility factor.
- Retro driving experience may be a turn-off for some, not as luxurious as rival SUVs, lacks a third row of seats.
- The utilitarian Grenadier is an off-road SUV that derives its luxury status more from its capability and its novelty than from its on-road comfort.

Overview
If you're increasingly put off by new automotive technology, the 2026 Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon might be exactly what you're looking for. Its old-school design makes for a simplistic, utilitarian SUV, meaning its hard-core off-road capability takes center stage. There's just one screen inside, a 12.3-inch infotainment readout that also doubles as a gauge cluster.
The Grenadier’s body-on-frame construction and old-fashioned chassis components admittedly deliver an unrefined on-road demeanor, but certain drivers will find the Grenadier appealing rather than unsophisticated. Two rows of seats offer room for five passengers, and the cargo area is generously sized, providing plenty of space for your next camping adventure.
Expert Tip: Ineos makes a pickup-truck version of the Grenadier called the Grenadier Quartermaster. We review that model separately.

What's New for 2026?
Ineos has made several improvements to the Grenadier Station Wagon for 2026, and the most noticeable one is an improvement to the SUV's rudimentary steering system. To reduce the amount of steering correction needed to keep the Grenadier heading straight and to address customer complaints about a lack of self-correction, the steering system has been revamped with different gearing and hydraulic stops. We've test-driven the 2026, and we can attest that it is much improved. Elsewhere, a new driver-monitoring system has been installed, new map pockets can be found on the front seat backs, and the optional Rough Pack package now includes BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K03 tires. The company says several software updates have also been done to improve performance off-road. A new Black Edition trim has been added, too, which wears an all-black look.
C/D Expert Tip:
If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Engine: 282-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: four-wheel-drive
The Grenadier is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six sourced from BMW. The engine is good for 281 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque. Drive is to all four wheels through a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox and a two-speed mechanical transfer case, which is operated by a chunky mechanical lever next to the gear selector.
All versions of the Grenadier get a locking center differential as standard, which is engaged by moving the low-range selector lever sideways. The electrically locking front and rear axle differentials that come with the optional Rough Pack package are controlled by buttons on the overhead console and, in our experience, are a little tricky to engage. The Grenadier Trialmaster Edition brings much more off-road equipment, including BF Goodrich all-terrain tires and a snorkel air intake. It also has a second battery, which allows it to power 110-volt appliances drawing up to 400 watts and is pre-wired to allow fitment of additional off-road lighting and other accessories.
Unlike many plusher rivals, the Grenadier doesn’t have selectable terrain response modes or a smart traction control system, so skill is required to get the most from it off-road. Given its off-road priorities, it's little surprise the Grenadier's on-road demeanor feels as if it comes from an earlier era than its luxurious rivals.
What's Your Car Worth?
Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.
0–60-MPH Times
- C/D 60-mph Test: 7.3 seconds
In Comparison: While the Grenadier's acceleration is respectable for a vehicle this size, the six-cylinder Defender is much quicker, with a time of 6.2 seconds to 60 mph.
Towing and Payload Capacity
- Max Towing: 7716 pounds
In Comparison: The Grenadier can out-tow the BMW X5, which is rated for 7200 pounds of towing capacity, but the Land Rover Defender can still tow more, with a maximum of 8201 pounds.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 16 mpg
- EPA City Ratings: 14-15 mpg
- EPA Highway Ratings: 14-15 mpg
The EPA estimates that the Grenadier Station Wagon should deliver fuel economy as high as 14 mpg city, 15 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined.
On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, the Grenadier delivered 16 mpg. For more information about the Grenadier's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
In Comparison: Among its rivals in the mid-size two-row luxury SUV segment, the Grenadier is the least fuel-efficient.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The Grenadier's cabin is trimmed with durable-feeling materials clearly designed for hard use, but the interior also features several neat design touches. Our favorite is the dashboard's center panel, with large physical switchgear clearly labeled in the manner of an airliner's control console. The aircraft impression continues with secondary switchgear, including the controls for the optional locking differentials, on the roof behind the rear-view mirror. We also love the secondary "toot" horn control, which produces a softer sound designed to warn cyclists and pedestrians.
Second Row: Despite being longer than many contemporary three-row SUVs, the Grenadier is only offered with two rows of seats, and rear legroom is more limited than in most similarly sized vehicles.
Cargo Capacity: Utility is generally good, with the Grenadier having a deep storage box between its front seats, a big glovebox, and several other smaller stowage compartments. The luggage compartment is big, too, with 44 cubic feet of volume with the rear seats in place. We fit 17 carry-on suitcases behind the Grenadier's rear seat; when we folded the rear seat, we squeezed in a total of 30.
Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audio System: 4-speaker stereo (standard), 5-speaker stereo (optional)
The Grenadier gets a single 12.3-inch central screen that handles both instrumentation and infotainment functions. What initially looks like a smaller digital display in front of the steering wheel is just a binnacle for warning lights; speed, fuel level, engine temperature, and revs are displayed in a small area on the left side of the center-stack screen.
The main section of the screen can be reconfigured to give more off-road driving data, as well as control entertainment functions. The Grenadier supports both wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Grenadier doesn't have a phone-charging wireless pad, but individual USB-A and USB-C charging ports are located inside the storage box between the front seats.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
All Grenadier models come with a lane departure warning system, automatic emergency braking, speed limit detection, and a driver drowsiness monitoring system. If you want more advanced driver-assistance tech, you'll have to look elsewhere.
- Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors
For information about the Grenadier's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Ineos offers a standard warranty of five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Maintenance is more intensive than most rivals, with standard intervals of 12,000 miles or one year, but 6000 miles and six months "under heavy or extreme use." So, if you plan to tackle rough terrain regularly, be prepared to visit the service center more frequently.
- Limited Warranty: three years or 60,000 miles
- Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary Maintenance: None
