KUALA LUMPUR: Genting Plantations Bhd's property arm has partnered with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to masterplan a 174-hectare smart campus in Johor, marking the Chinese technology group's first international smart campus partnership.
Genting Property Sdn Bhd signed a master planning agreement with Huawei to advance the Johor Tech Smart City (JTSC) development, including its flagship Smart Campus within the Knowledge AI Campus.
The agreement was formalised at the Shenzhen Longgang International Art Centre in China, alongside Huawei's "Cloud-Powered Infrastructure – A New Digital Ecosystem" event.
The partnership will bring Huawei's artificial intelligence capabilities, technological expertise and smart campus experience into the development's planning phase, drawing on its existing smart campus projects in Shanghai and Dongguan.
Genting Plantations chief executive and executive director Datuk Indera Lim Keong Hui said the collaboration would help translate the development's vision into tangible economic opportunities.
"This partnership answers a vital question we asked ourselves when designing JTSC: How do we build the future today to make a profound, real-world impact?" he said.
He added that the project would empower local talent and attract sought-after investments, positioning Malaysians to benefit from technological growth at home.
Huawei Malaysia deputy chief executive of its Enterprise Business Group, Du Xianjun, said the partnership marked the first time the company's smart campus model would be extended to an international partner.
"The 174ha Smart Campus in JTSC will serve as a benchmark model for how future intelligent ecosystems are built and managed worldwide," he said.
Beyond the campus, the collaboration could extend to digital transformation across the wider Genting Plantations group, including agricultural technology, sustainable energy management and data-driven corporate infrastructure.
The development is also intended to support the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone by attracting multinational technology companies, advanced manufacturing investments and innovation-driven businesses.
The signing was witnessed by Genting Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Huawei executive member of the supervisory board and chief logistics officer Ren Shulu.
