Freak weather in holiday destinations like Spain is forcing the tourist industry to react. Airbnb, for example, now offers an optional insurance product called Weather Protection, underwritten by Chubb European Group SE, which automatically pays out cash to guests if it rains heavily during their stay.
Announced this month, this parametric insurance eliminates the need to file traditional claims or submit photos; instead, it automatically tracks local weather data and triggers instant notifications and payouts when rainfall crosses a set threshold.
It is only available to guests residing in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. A daily payout is triggered if it rains at least 1.5 mm in a single hour between 08:00 and 20:00 local time at your Airbnb location.
Daily payouts range from €50 to €1,000 per day (or local currency equivalent), depending on the policy terms shown on your Certificate of Insurance.
If the independent radar and satellite data confirm the rainfall threshold was met, Airbnb and Chubb text or email you a direct link to a portal to collect your funds immediately.
