By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño is seeking international support to address Belize’s growing sargassum crisis, which continues to threaten tourism, livelihoods, public health and the environment.
Briceño is leading a high-level delegation to the 2026 World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, where Belize is pursuing financing and partnerships to address national development priorities.
In a video message to Belizeans, Briceño said, “Belize bears the costs of challenges we did little to create, sargassum washing onto our shores threatens tourism, livelihoods and our economy.”
He added, “Climate change and harmful practices across the region compound this problem.”
On Tuesday, October 13, Briceño met with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Ilan Goldfajn on the margins of the meetings. Their discussions included Belize’s efforts to address sargassum through offshore collection, renewable energy solutions, carbon-credit opportunities and the development of useful by-products.
Briceño said the Government of Belize is also consulting with the private sector on using sargassum by-products to generate electricity and support broader waste-to-energy initiatives.
