Eldoret has never quite seen anything like it. Mashujaa Day 2026 made history as the first national holiday hosted in Uasin Gishu since President William Ruto assumed office, and the city of champions rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

The celebrations unfolded at the newly refurbished Kipchoge Keino Stadium, with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attending as the chief guest. But for many Kenyans watching from home and filling the terraces by 7am, the day felt far more personal than a standard state occasion.
1. The power couple's co-ordinated entrance
This is the official homecoming portrait Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto holding hands on the red carpet before stepping out for Mashujaa Day at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

The President is sharp in a classic navy-blue suit, white shirt and a bright pink tie his signature Mashujaa look paired with black polished shoes.
He is all smiles, looking confident as he hosts the national celebrations for the first time in his home turf. Rachel stuns beside him in a full-length African print dress dominated by magenta pink, mustard yellow and black with dramatic ruffled peplum shoulders and a fitted mermaid-style skirt that shows off the bold drum-motif print.
She kept her accessories simple with a silver watch. Framed by two giant Kenyan flags and white flower vases with red and white roses on a state lodge entrance, the image screams "ready for homecoming." This was taken moments before they walked to the dais to greet Mama Sarah and other leaders.

2. Ruto and Abiy's bromance under the Eldoret sun
The photo of the day. President Ruto and PM Abiy Ahmed standing side-by-side on the main dais, both shielding their eyes with their right hands as they looked up to watch the Kenya Air Force fly-past.
Both were caught mid-laugh, with Abiy in his navy Kaunda suit and shades, and Ruto in his dark suit and pink tie. It was the most human moment of the day two presidents forgetting protocol and enjoying the airshow like ordinary wananchi.

3. The VIP front row: Atwoli, Sudi and Boss Sholei
The power row was hard to miss. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi in a black suit, gold tie and silver reflective shades, sat next to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli who rocked his signature black pinstriped shirt and yellow-tinted shades while holding his phone. Next to them was Uasin Gishu Woman Rep Gladys Boss Sholei in a bright red patriotic outfit with green-white-red stripes. Their serious faces as they watched the parade showed the weight of hosting at home.

4. The race where Ofweneke floored government officials
The comic relief! In a special invitational race meant for fun, a man in a white vest and green pants identified as Ofwene unexpectedly floored everyone — including CSs and PSs who were in official green and red Mashujaa tracksuits. As Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala jogged and smiled in bib 2378, Ofwene was in full sprint, leaving senior officials gasping for air behind him. The crowd in the terraces went crazy. This clip is already trending on TikTok.

5. Ruto's motorcade shut down Eldoret
This was proof it was a homecoming. A fleet of white police outriders led President Ruto's black SUVs through Eldoret town as thousands lined the road, phones up, waving and cheering. In the background, a giant billboard read "Karibu Uasin Gishu H.E. President DR William Samoi Ruto, C.G.H. 2026". The crowd stretched as far as the eye could see — boda riders, traders, and school children all out to welcome their son.

6. The Iconic C-in-C Inspection*
The classic presidential shot. President Ruto standing tall in the back of the famous green Toyota Land Cruiser with the number plate C IN C, inspecting the guard of honour.
He held the gold rail of the glass-enclosed cabin while chatting with a senior naval officer in full white ceremonial uniform. With small presidential flags fluttering and blue-red lights flashing on the grille, it was Ruto's first inspection as Commander-in-Chief on home soil in Eldoret.

7. Karibu rais billboards take over town
The photo that sums up the whole debate. A massive billboard at an Eldoret roundabout reading 'Karibu Rais H.E. Dr William Ruto Happy Mashujaa Day' featuring a huge smiling Ruto giving a thumbs up, with his close ally Hon. Oscar Sudi below him. The billboard, mounted by Magnate Ventures, towered over bodas and matatus. Dozens of such billboards erected by local leaders turned the national holiday into what many called a presidential homecoming party.
Mashujaa Day 2026 in Eldoret was not just about celebrating heroes — it was about history, politics, and pride.
