Patrick Kane etched his name into the history books on Thursday night at the United Center. He recorded his 895th career assist, a helper that put Connor Bedard past the Winnipeg Jets net. This single play moved Kane past Phil Housley for the most assists ever by a U.S.-born player in the NHL. The crowd roared as the American legend cemented a legacy that few thought he would still be adding to at this stage of his career.
The goal came during a power-play situation where the Blackhawks held a 5-on-3 advantage. Bedard fired the puck home to score his first goal of the 2026-27 season. It was also the first goal of his career while wearing the captain’s “C.” Tyler Bertuzzi also earned an assist on the play, marking his 200th career helper in the league.
A New Chapter for Bedard
Connor Bedard has been the face of the franchise since he was drafted. He finally broke his goalless streak for the season in a way that mattered most. According to Yahoo Sports, Kane was genuinely impressed with the shot Bedard unleashed. The connection between the veteran star and the young captain seems to be growing stronger every time they step on the ice together. Their chemistry on the top line is becoming a major weapon for the team.
Roman Kantserov, a rookie who plays on the same line, watched the moment unfold with awe. He told RG.org that the reception Kane received when he returned to Chicago was unforgettable. “There are legends here, and Kane is back,” Kantserov said. He noted that the crowd’s energy was so loud that television cameras just could not capture the full feeling of the room. For a young player like Kantserov, sharing the ice with Kane is a dream come true.
Surpassing Phil Housley is a massive milestone for American hockey. Housley was a dominant force, but Kane’s consistency over nearly two decades is what allowed him to reach the top spot. This record highlights the growth of U.S. talent in a sport that has long been dominated by Canadian and European players. “He’s got the same drive and passion, which I think is going to have a long-lasting effect on a lot of these players inside that dressing room,” Olczyk said.
Olczyk added that Kane’s influence on the franchise will last a long time, regardless of how many points he scores from here on. The young players in the locker room see what it takes to stay at the top level for so long. They see the work ethic required to set a record that stood for years.
The Road Ahead
The Blackhawks now have a captain who has scored his first goal and a legend who has set a new standard. The team faces a tough schedule ahead, but the momentum from this game could be a turning point. Roman Kantserov admitted that he had to prove himself after skipping the AHL to join the big club. Kane and Bedard immediately placed him on the first power-play unit, a move that worked at once, he observed.
But for one night in Chicago, the focus was on a number that will stand for a long time: 895.
