Marked by communal harmony, religious fervour and enthusiastic public participation, this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in Kalyanpur concluded peacefully without any untoward incident. From Shashthi to Dashami, thousands of devotees and visitors across all age groups participated in the five-day festival, turning the region into a vibrant hub of devotion and celebration.
The festive spirit was evident from the very beginning of the celebrations. On the evening of Shashthi, local MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury formally inaugurated the Durga Puja pandals of four prominent clubs of the area, namely Young Blood Club, Ekatra Sangha, Netaji Club and Baghajatin Club. Several distinguished residents and community leaders were also present, adding to the festive atmosphere surrounding the inaugurations.
Religious activities witnessed overwhelming participation throughout the festival, particularly on Maha Ashtami, when devotees queued up from the early hours to offer pushpanjali at various puja venues across Kalyanpur, Gilatali, Premsingh, Mokambari, Adunia, Boro Maidan, Moharchhara, Totabari, Amar Colony, Ratia and Santinagar. Traditional rituals also drew large gatherings, with devotees lining up at several pandals, including the Khash Kalyanpur Sarbojanin Puja Mandap, to take part in age-old religious observances.
The flow of devotees continued through Ashtami and Navami, with puja committees organising large-scale distribution of prasad. On Navami, several pandals arranged community feasts for devotees. Adding to the celebrations, the Kalyanpur Market Merchants’ Association organised distribution of special festive meals among visitors and residents, an initiative that received an enthusiastic response from the local community.
A key feature of this year’s celebrations was the effective management of crowds and traffic. Police personnel, assisted by members of the Scout and Guide, remained actively deployed across important locations to ensure smooth movement of visitors and vehicles. Their coordinated efforts played a significant role in maintaining order throughout the festival. Uninterrupted power supply further contributed to the festive experience, allowing visitors to enjoy illuminated pandals and idol displays well into the night.
Among all puja venues in Khowai district, the Durga Puja organised by the 6th Battalion TSR at Ramchandraghat witnessed particularly heavy footfall. The large turnout required extensive crowd-control measures, with police maintaining strict vigilance to ensure the safety and convenience of visitors.
On Vijaya Dashami, idols from several community pujas were immersed at the Kalyanpur Dashami Ghat in the Khowai River amid emotional farewells and traditional rituals. However, idols of some of the major clubs, including Young Blood Club, Ekatra Sangha, Netaji Club and Baghajatin Club, were not immersed on the day and are scheduled to undergo immersion on the following day.
As part of the Vijaya Dashami celebrations, MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury distributed sweets among traders at Kalyanpur Market and exchanged festive greetings with residents and members of the business community, further reinforcing the spirit of goodwill and togetherness associated with the occasion.
The successful conclusion of the festival has been widely welcomed by residents, with the celebrations standing out for their peaceful atmosphere, religious devotion, social harmony and active public participation.
The massive turnout at pandals throughout the five days once again demonstrated that Durga Puja is not merely a religious observance but also a powerful symbol of unity, cultural bonding and community spirit. With no major incidents reported, Kalyanpur bid farewell to this year’s Sharadiya celebrations on a note of satisfaction, joy and collective harmony.
