Wayne Carey has had enough of toxic “shock jock” Sam Newman.
The North Melbourne great has joined a growing list of people who can’t work with the 80-year-old due to his vile yet predictable takes about women.
Carey’s commitment to Newman’s podcast You Cannot Be Serious had been dwindling, and last week the 55-year-old was again uncomfortable with Newman when the latter started talking nonsense about the Sydney Swans’ Pullman five.
Newman might well be dubbed a “shock jock” but ultimately his hot takes don’t actually shock anymore ... they’re predictable, boring, and out of touch.
Carey, himself on a long and slow journey to repair his image, could see it and didn’t want to be part of it.
Last week Newman was trying to say Sydney’s Pullman five scandal was a “beat-up” ... a ludicrous assertion given there is a police investigation, sexual assault allegations, and one of the five, Nick Blakey, has torn up his contract and walked out on the Swans.
“Sam, I haven’t come on here to talk about the Sydney shit,” Carey said to Newman in a desperate bid to again rein in the fallen TV presenter.
“Plenty of other stuff to talk about. I have not one bit of interest in it.
“Life’s too short to be up in arms about everything that goes on in the world.”
The list of high-profile names to have now dumped the podcast include Carey, former Hawthorn captain Don Scott and former Herald Sun reporter Mike Sheahan.
Earlier this year Newman made misinformed and vile comments about the rape victim at the centre of the Ralph Carr case.
“I’m just wondering what sort of evidence they had about him raping her ... Other than the fact she might have buyer’s remorse,” Newman, who was overseas at the time, naively blurted out.
Again, Carey tried to shut him down.
“Sam given that you’re in Sicily and you are only going off what you are reading, I’d probably suggest you don’t have an opinion about it, just like I don’t,” Carey said.
Newman has confirmed that Carey (who went by the name ‘Duck’ in his playing days), has indeed quit.
“The Duck has become uncomfortable with some of the subjects that I bring up,” Newman said.
“Wayne, to his great credit, is trying to change his image.
“The people who listen to this won’t let Wayne change their image of him, and they won’t change their image of me. I have no problem with what people say about me, but Wayne has tried to move on.
“He has a young family and it must be a hell of a bugbear to him.
“Every time he mentions something, they say, ‘Oh, yes. But don’t forget,’ ... and then they bring up his past.”
Newman was widely criticised last year when he gave two high-profile neo-Nazis a voice on his podcast.
There were calls then for Newman to be dumped from the Australian Football Hall of Fame, as there were this year when he made the comments about a rape victim.
The AFL has yet to take action on Newman despite the fact they have the power to boot him out.
He was controversially inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, despite having dubious claims on the honour.
Carey is also a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest to have ever played the game.
Based on his playing ability, he would be an automatic Legend, however, he has not been elevated to Legend status due to his checkered past and controversial run-ins with women.
