Shillong, Oct 13: The extension of the GHADC term is aimed at completing necessary formalities for holding elections, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Tuesday.
The cabinet on October 7 had decided to extend the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council by six months.
Clarifying the decision, Sangma said the government intends to hold the polls before the extended term ends.
He said the delimitation exercise could not be completed without the separate electoral roll (SER) being approved by the Governor.
“The delimitation was a very exhaustive exercise which required incorporation of a separate electoral roll. If delimitation is done without it, it completely changes the entire picture,” he said.
The SER was approved by the Governor about 10 days back, following which the delimitation committee moved forward with the final exercise, he said.
“Let me make it clear to citizens, especially in Garo Hills that this is a necessary exercise. We are not trying to delay elections. Elections cannot be held without delimitation and delimitation cannot be completed without SER,” Sangma said.
“Now that SER is done, delimitation will be completed, the electoral roll will be published and an election will be held. All these processes are connected and we are confident of completing it within six months and holding elections at the earliest,” he added.
