SEPANG: Police have stepped up K9 patrols at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), particularly during peak hours, to strengthen security following several recent incidents.
KLIA police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Ravi said patrols, previously conducted periodically, had been increased to bolster security at the airport.
He said deployments were planned around peak periods while ensuring the detection dogs had sufficient rest.
"The deployment is not continuous 24 hours a day because the dogs also need rest. We have to identify peak hours and deploy them at appropriate times," he said when contacted.
Ravi said patrols also took into account airport users' sensitivities, with handlers and their dogs deployed outside the terminal, including around entrances.
A check at KLIA Terminal 1 found K9 units and their handlers patrolling outside the terminal, particularly at the departure and arrival levels.
The K9 units are part of security measures to monitor entrances and other areas frequented by airport users.
Their presence alongside police personnel also allows for more comprehensive security monitoring as authorities step up patrols at strategic locations.
