By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will go ahead on December 3, but the public will not be watching.
President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that Hasan will be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, as scheduled. He overruled a plan by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to livestream it.
Hasan, a former US Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 in a 2009 attack at Fort Hood. He was convicted by a military court and sentenced to death in 2013.
The case has once again put the death penalty in the spotlight, a debate that also echoes here in Belize.
The death penalty remains on Belize’s law books, with hanging as the method of execution. But Belize has not carried out an execution since 1985. Court rulings over the years have also ended the mandatory death sentence for murder, giving judges discretion in sentencing.
Every so often, especially after violent crimes that shock the nation, calls resurface for Belize to resume executions. Others argue the death penalty does not deter crime and risks irreversible mistakes.
So we want to hear from you, Belize.
Should Belize bring back executions for the most serious crimes? Or should the death penalty be abolished altogether?
