It’s become somewhat absurd how involved betting companies are in sports nowadays. From elite professional athletes like LeBron James being sponsored by Polymarket to insider reporters being employed by the likes of FanDuel, conspiracy theories are only growing as we near 2027.
Sometimes, sports bettors get a little too paranoid, though. That appears to be what’s happening following the ending of Sunday’s game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots. Coming into the game, the Patriots were favored by 7.5 points. With the score at 26-16, the Jets kicked a field goal on 2nd and 10 with 36 seconds left in the game.

New York Jets late game field goal that ruined betting spread vs. New England Patriots was common football logic
The field goal cut the lead to seven points, and the final score ended up being 26-19. That was heartbreak for those who bet -7.5 on the Patriots. Naturally, that sparked outrage among those bettors, with many claiming the sportsbooks were out to get them.
In reality, the Jets simply made the correct football decision. Without timeouts in a two-score game, the Jets couldn’t afford to continue running plays that may have kept the clock running. Instead, they took the easy 36-yard field goal, in order to try for an onside kick. If they recovered the onside kick, they would have had 32 seconds to work with.
Things might have been different if the Jets were closer to the end zone, but they were 18 yards away when they kicked the field goal. They needed to cut the lead to one score, and give themselves a chance with some time left. Ultimately, they didn’t recover the onside kick, but almost every logical football fan has called out the enraged sports bettors for having a “lack of ball knowledge”.
