First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Thursday inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and launched a N1 billion empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries in Edo state.
The programme will provide N200,000 each to beneficiaries to support small businesses, improve livelihoods and promote financial independence.
Speaking at the event in Benin City, Tinubu commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for the initiatives, saying they reflected his commitment to the welfare and economic advancement of Edo residents.
She said the CNG buses would improve public transportation, while the empowerment scheme would create opportunities for women, youths and other vulnerable groups.
“I pray that the monies received will prosper in your hands and grow your businesses,” she said.
The First Lady described the initiatives as important interventions that could strengthen local businesses, improve living standards and contribute to economic growth.
She also expressed delight at returning to Edo for the inauguration of the buses, which are expected to provide transportation services to residents.
Earlier, Governor Okpebholo described the First Lady’s visit as a demonstration of concern for the welfare and development of the people.
He said the state government introduced the initiatives to address the challenges of transportation costs and limited economic opportunities, particularly among women and small-business owners.
According to him, the CNG buses will provide more affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation, while the empowerment scheme will help beneficiaries expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
“When you empower a woman, you strengthen a family, uplift a community and contribute to the prosperity of society,” the governor said.
Okpebholo expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support, reaffirming his loyalty to the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said, “our commitment is to build an Edo State where good governance is felt in every home, opportunities are within the reach of every citizen, and no community is left behind.”
