You Young of Kyung Hee University, the latest in South Korea's line of figure skating stars, took the lead in the short program on the opening day of the national trials to select the team for the 2027 Changchun Winter Universiade.
You scored 65.01 points in the women's singles short program on the 15th at the Citizens Sports Center ice rink, operated by the Gimhae Cultural Tourism Foundation, in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, combining 33.72 points for technical elements (TES) and 31.29 points for program components (PCS). She finished 4.97 points ahead of Lee Hae-in of Korea University, who scored 60.04. Kim Seo-young of Myongji University was third with 50.09 points, followed by Yoon A-sun of Kyung Hee University with 46.87.
You cleanly executed her opening double axel, then built momentum with a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination that earned 1.43 points in grade of execution (GOE). She completed her flying camel spin at level four, the highest grade.
Her triple flip in the latter half, however, proved costly. An edge attention call combined with a quarter landing — a rotation short by 90 degrees — cost her 1.21 points in GOE. Her step sequence and change-foot combination spin were both graded level three, and her closing layback spin level two.
In the men's singles, Kim Hyun-gyeom of Korea University led with 77.67 points, combining 40.52 for TES and 37.15 for PCS. Lee Jae-keun of Korea University was second with 74.32 points, and Cha Young-hyun, a non-affiliated skater from Sejong, was third with 70.48.
Final standings in both the men's and women's singles will be decided by adding scores from the free skate, to be held at the same venue on the 16th.
