Jim Chalmers urges progressive reformers to meet angry voters drawn to One Nation’s politics with “respect and understanding”.
According to Australia’s treasurer, it is only with humility, a strong grasp of reality, and persuasive vision that modern politics can meet the challenge posed by the increasing popularity of “far-right” sentiment.
In an impassioned speech in Canberra about economic policy and Labor’s reform agenda, Jim Chalmers said the best response to fellow Australians who found idealised versions of the ‘good old days’ compelling was to show them how this promise was illusory.
People should not turn against their fellow Australians, the treasurer said, calling for those who saw themselves as “serious progressives” to avoid scolding, talking down, to or mocking others.
