What is this Whale Doing by Selling Bitcoin to Buy Ether?
It is replacing its bitcoin with ether, step by step. According to Lookonchain, a whale sold 1,074.36 BTC ($89.5 million) and bought 36,159 ETH ($90.6 million) over three days, as of October 14, 2026. The operations are done in batches. On the night of October 11 to 12, Lookonchain reported 410.14 BTC sold on Hyperliquid ($34.16 million), then 14,341 ethereum bought on decentralized platforms ($36.14 million). On October 12, 229 BTC ($19.1 million) were exchanged for 7,469.8 ETH ($19.1 million).
| Period | BTC sold | ETH bought | Source |
| Night of 10/11 to 10/12/2026 | 410.14 BTC ($34.16 M) | 14,341 ETH ($36.14 M) | Lookonchain |
| 10/12/2026 | 229 BTC ($19.1 M) | 7,469.8 ETH ($19.1 M) | Lookonchain |
| Remaining cumulative, not detailed | about 435 BTC ($36.2 M) | about 14,348 ETH ($35.4 M) | Cointribune Calculation |
| Cumulative over three days, as of 10/14/2026 | 1,074.36 BTC ($89.5 M) | 36,159 ETH ($90.6 M) | Lookonchain |
Imagine a traveler exchanging euros for dollars at the airport: he hasn’t spent anything, he just changed currency. Here, this traveler handles millions. Arkham snapshots show exchanges in batches around $2 million in USDC. This split can limit the effect on the price, without guarantee that it is nil.
At what Price did the Whale Exchange its Bitcoin?
At the market rate, according to our calculations. From one batch to another, it obtained between 32.6 and 35.0 ETH for each BTC sold. At the opening of October 13, the market was trading around 33.4 ETH per BTC, or $81,754 per bitcoin against $2,444 per ethereum, according to Yahoo Finance. That same day, ether opened down 3.6% on Monday, against 2.3% for bitcoin. The three-day period apparently includes this session, but Lookonchain does not specify when the whale bought.
No one knows who this whale is. Lookonchain talks about a mysterious whale without giving an identity, and the analysis platform Arkham Intelligence has made a labeled entity BTC-to-ETH Whale, grouping 145 addresses. Arkham tracks movements on the blockchain, reading addresses and amounts, never a name or ID. Lookonchain summarizes the situation in a message posted on X:
This mysterious whale continues shifting from $BTC to $ETH.
What do we Really Know About this Operation?
We know what was exchanged, not why. The amounts come from Lookonchain and Arkham, two tools that read the blockchain without being able to identify the owner. The motive, the follow-up, and the identity remain unverified. A bitcoin sale followed by an ether purchase shows a changed exposure, not proven conviction. Among other things, rebalancing, trading or another position remain possible.
Especially since exchanging bitcoin for ether does not protect against a decline, as both remain risky assets. The movement of a single whale with $90 million as of October 14, 2026 proves nothing about the direction of the crypto market.
Without a new batch, this operation will simply be that of a whale exchanging bitcoin for ethereum. Except that right now, when the crypto market awaits inflation data and a Fed rate cut, this kind of operation could probably cause panic.
