Nearly two months after India's former Test cricketer Yusuf Pathan quit the Trinamool Congress, the BJP government in Gujarat has proposed to gift him 500 square metres of a disputed municipal plot in Vadodara, offering the remaining land at a concessional rate.
The proposal, submitted by the Vadodara municipal commissioner, will be presented for final approval to the standing committee of the BJP-ruled civic body on 23 October, according to the agenda shared on Monday.
Pathan, who was elected from West Bengal's Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency in 2024 on a TMC ticket, joined a group of 20 TMC MPs who broke away from the Mamata Banerjee-led party after its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections. They merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, a little-known outfit, to join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Parliament.
Pathan had sought the plot since 2012 but faced legal hurdles and notices from the civic body over alleged encroachment.
Under the latest proposal, the remaining 478 square metres will be valued at 55% of the rate fixed by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority Valuation Committee, amounting to a 45% concession.
