- Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus revealed the one country he would consider coaching outside South Africa
- His answer surprised many rugby fans and involved swapping the green and gold for the jersey of a rival nation
- Erasmus also named a specific player he would love to work with at his dream coaching destination
Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has named England as the only country he would consider coaching outside South Africa, an admission that is likely to raise a few eyebrows among Springbok supporters.
The double Rugby World Cup winner made the revelation during a 2022 interview, expressing genuine admiration for what he could achieve with the English side.
"South Africa has my heart, but coaching England would be amazing, because I think they can win," Erasmus said at the time.
Erasmus casts doubt on English welcome
Despite his interest, Erasmus acknowledged that his reception in England might be frosty, given the lingering tensions from the controversial British and Irish Lions series in 2021.
"I don't think the English people would ever want me there now. Maybe I am wrong. I hope I am wrong," he said.
He also highlighted loosehead prop Ellis Genge as a player he would particularly enjoy working with. "I would love to coach Ellis Genge," Erasmus revealed.
Springboks secure Erasmus until 2031
Any prospect of an England move appears firmly off the table for the foreseeable future. SA Rugby confirmed in December 2025 that Erasmus had signed a contract extension, tying him to the Springboks through to the 2031 Rugby World Cup, which is scheduled to be staged in the United States.
The extension ended speculation about his future and ensures that Erasmus will lead South Africa's charge for a third consecutive World Cup title on American soil, rather than guiding the host nation.
