There are some hues that I just associate with fall year in and year out. As soon as there’s the slightest chill in the air, I start opting for all my favorite classic fall nail colors: There’s just nothing like a chocolate brown mani, burgundy mani, or, if I want a little nail art, a very seasonally-appropriate chai latte mani. And of course, that goes for my outfits too—I find that there’s a decent amount of overlap between my fashion closet and my beauty closet. This year is no different: I spotted a lot of rich purple on the fall/winter 2026 runways, and lo and behold, I’ve now found myself searching for alllll the plum nail ideas.
I asked two nail artists if they’ve seen an increase in clients asking for the color lately, and the answer was a resounding yes from both of them. “Every year, we see deeper wine, burgundy, and berry shades coming back, but plum is getting particular attention this season,” says nail artist Vikki Swan, who also notes that plum leans more purple than your traditional burgundy. “It’s a great option for anyone who loves darker nails but wants something a little different from the usual fall colors.” So, let’s get into it. Keep reading to learn all about the trend, plus get plenty of plum nail ideas for you to screenshot at the end.
What are plum nails?
Plum is a truly classic fall color—it’s rich, it’s moody, and it’s the perfect middle ground between full-on purple and red. As nail artist Max Estrada puts it, “It’s romantic, slightly mysterious and very luxurious.” Think of the skin of a plum: It can range from reddish-purple to a dark, near-black indigo shade. And that’s exactly what you can expect from plum nails as well. “One of the most interesting things about plum is how much it can change depending on the lighting,” says Swan. “In daylight, the purple and berry undertones become more noticeable, while in softer lighting, the color can look much darker and richer.”
The expensive-looking shade also plays well with others: “Plum also pairs beautifully with fall wardrobe colors like chocolate brown, gray, olive green, and beige,” says Swan. “It’s one of those shades that can make even a simple, solid-color manicure look interesting without any additional nail art.” Of all those color combos, it seems like plum and olive manis are having the biggest moment so far this season.
How to wear plum nails
When deciding on the plum manicure for you, you’ll want to start by considering your nail shape. You can really opt for any shape and length you’d like, but because plum is such a chameleon, the vibe of your look can change dramatically if you go for a long stiletto versus a short square. “On short oval or soft square nails, it looks clean and understated,” says Swan. “On longer almond or structured square nails, the same color creates a much bolder effect.” Swan especially loves “a deep plum shade on a perfectly shaped square nail with a high-gloss finish.” And ya know what, that sounds pretty great to me too. Estrada takes a slightly different approach: “I adore plum on elongated almond, dramatic coffin, and extra-long stiletto nails,” he says. “Length gives the shade presence.” And this is exactly the point—you can wear your plum nails how you like ‘em.
A quick note about nail and cuticle prep as well: “One thing to keep in mind is that dark colors make the nail outline more noticeable, so symmetry, proper structure, and precise application around the cuticle are especially important,” Swan adds. Basically, make sure you’ve trimmed, pushed back, and shaped everything you need to before polish. (Here’s a more in-depth guide to applying—and successfully removing—dark nail polish, if you want more tips.)
After your nails are prepped, you can keep your mani simple and go with a glossy plum shade or go with some fun fall nail designs instead. The nail experts I spoke to for this story love plum jammy nails, aura nails, cat eye, and French manicures—all made elevated by the expensive-looking shade.
