Norwegian football players are on a roll. Another of the country’s teams good enough to be playing in the Champions’ League, Bodø/Glimt, beat another top German team, just a day after Stavanger’s Vikings did the same.
Football commentators were as happily stunned as fans in the stands, after Bodø/Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund (Norwegian superstar Erling Braut Haaland’s former club) by a score of 1-0 on home turf in Bødo’s small and old-fashioned stadium. Fredrik Sjøvold kicked in the goal that not only won the match but gave Bodø/Glimt three points from the otherwise mighty German team that’s been leading Champions League standings.
Viking in Stavanger had done much the same on Tuesday, and both teams’ strong showings are grabbing attention. Two of Germany’s biggest clubs have faced strong opposition in Norway, which also did well at the World Cup last summer. “There are many who talk about ‘little Norway,’ but I don’t know if we’re little any longer,” said Glimt player Haitam Aleesami, while grinning from ear to ear.
