SEPANG: Police have stepped up K9 unit patrols at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), particularly during peak hours, following several recent security incidents.
KLIA police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Ravi said the patrols, previously conducted periodically, had been increased to bolster security at the airport.
He said deployments were planned around peak periods.
"The deployment is not 24 hours a day because the dogs also need rest. We have to identify peak hours and deploy them at appropriate times," he said.
Ravi said patrols also took into account airport users' sensitivities, with handlers and their dogs deployed outside the terminal, including around entrances.
A check at KLIA Terminal 1 yesterday found K9 units patrolling outside, particularly at the departure and arrival levels.
The K9 units are part of security measures to monitor entrances and other areas frequented by airport users.
Their presence alongside other policemen strengthens security monitoring as authorities step up patrols at strategic locations.
