Verstappen dominates for first Singapore Grand Prix win

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took his second dominant victory within a week as he secured his first win in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Verstappen fought off an attack from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc off the start line to control the race from start to finish.

The win followed his and Red Bull's maiden victory of the year in Malaysia last weekend and sprint race success in Singapore on Saturday, confirming the team's re-emergence as a major force.

Leclerc took second as team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished sixth after a baffling strategy that was a consequence of the Briton choosing not to pit when asked.

Hamilton, trying to last out on a set of soft tyres for a mammoth 44 laps, lost out in the closing laps to Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Antonelli's third place combined with team-mate George Russell finishing only ninth after starting from 19th extends the Italian's championship lead to 102 points.

That means it is possible for Antonelli to clinch his first world title at the next race, the United States Grand Prix on 25 October.

To become champion in Austin, he would need to win the race with Russell finishing ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower.

The key stories of the race were:

Verstappen knew he needed to get into the first corner first to try to win the race, given the difficulty of overtaking in Singapore, and he fought tooth and nail to make sure he did.

Leclerc got a better start than Verstappen off the line and challenged down the inside as they approached Turn One.

But Verstappen squeezed him tight towards the pit wall and with their entry to the first corner so compromised, Leclerc eventually backed off and the four-time champion could claim the corner.

Verstappen, Leclerc and Hamilton ran nose to tail for the first four laps before the seven-time champion began to drop back from about lap five.

Leclerc stuck within a second of Verstappen for a further five laps before the Red Bull began to edge away from him as well.

From then on, Verstappen continued to build his lead and never looked like being beaten as he motored away into the distance.

"I think the last few races have been really positive for us and it is just great to see and we have a lot of motivation in the team to try and deliver even more results," said Verstappen.

"It is a really good group of people - I really enjoy working with them and hopefully we can have a bit more fun until the end of the year."

In the interviews immediately after the race, Antonelli was told he can win the title in Austin and responded: "Can I? Really? Let's not worry about that, let's try to do the best weekend possible and finish the job."

Hamilton had started on the medium tyres while Verstappen and Leclerc chose the softs. Despite his theoretically more durable tyres, the Briton pitted on lap 18 to switch to the softs, while Leclerc waited until lap 24 to swap his softs for mediums.

Leclerc came out of the pits from his stop just ahead of Hamilton, who had stronger pace on his softer tyres.

Yet Ferrari chose not to order Leclerc to let Hamilton through to maximise his pace, a decision that was questioned by Hamilton from the car.

A virtual safety car was called on lap 39 and Leclerc and Antonelli, who had chased the Ferraris closely from the start from his fourth place on the grid, took the opportunity for a cheap pit stop - it takes 10 seconds less to stop under a safety car than under racing conditions.

Yet Hamilton, despite having older tyres, did not stop, a decision that promoted him to second behind Verstappen.

As Leclerc was catching Hamilton, the Briton was told he needed to stop again; he pushed back to suggest he try to go to the end, but was told they were six laps short to make it in terms of tyre life.

Leclerc soon caught Hamilton and passed him on lap 46 and set off after Verstappen, but could get no closer than 7.3 seconds to the Red Bull.

Hamilton never did stop, but as his tyres lost grip he fell back into the clutches of Norris and Antonelli.

A passing attempt by Norris on lap 54 with eight to go saw Hamilton run off track and take to the escape road at Turn One, but as he did, Antonelli grabbed the chance to pass the McLaren, and then Hamilton later on the same lap.

Norris followed him through, and now Hamilton fell back towards the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri, who passed him on the final lap after a resolute attempted defence from Hamilton.

It was Hamilton's call not to stop and he apologised for it on the slowing down lap - but there remain a number of questions as to the choices made.

Russell's fight back through the field took him up to seventh as he delayed his pit stop as long as possible.

But after dropping back to 10th behind Audi's Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine's Pierre Gasly, he passed Gasly after trailing him for 10 laps or so, but could not make it past Hulkenberg, who was himself chasing Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar took the final point in 10th after starting from the back.
