Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda has challenged members who reject Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership to leave the party rather than fuel internal divisions.
Chimwendo issued the warning as the party faces the task of rebuilding unity ahead of the 2030 elections.
Speaking at a rally organised to welcome Dowa West legislator Aida Mchenga, who won her seat as an independent candidate, Chimwendo accused some legislators of insulting Chakwera and undermining party unity.
He said members who cannot respect or work with the former president should consider forming their own political movement instead of remaining in MCP.
Chimwendo called for peace and mutual respect among members as the party prepares to make another attempt to regain power in 2030.
Meanwhile, Lilongwe Chilobwe legislator Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya turned his attention to the government’s farm input support programme, raising concerns over the distribution of subsidised agricultural inputs.
Chaziya claimed that reducing the number of beneficiaries in the Central Region, a major agricultural production area, could threaten food security and increase the risk of hunger next year.
The claim about the distribution of farm inputs had not been independently verified.
Mchenga, who was welcomed at the rally, pledged to work with MCP and pursue development projects aimed at improving the welfare of people in Dowa West.
