ATHENS, October 2026 — A former Mazonakis clinic employee has described seeing singer Giorgos Mazonakis as staff tried to revive him at a central Athens practice, in a television interview aired on Wednesday night.
The woman, described as a nurse, spoke on the premiere of Petros Kousoulos’ program “Nychta Apokalypseon” (“Night of Revelations”). Her name was not given in the report of the interview.
She worked at the practice on Karneadou Street, in Kolonaki, run by Dr Ioanna Gaka, 56. Gaka and her husband, Dr Ilias Theodoropoulos, 58, are in pre-trial detention over the singer’s death on 9 September and deny wrongdoing.
The employee said she saw the singer when the panic started, at about 4pm. “I got scared, I turned my head,” she said. “He was very, very pale, almost white.”
Mazonakis clinic employee account
The Mazonakis clinic employee said the female doctor came to her at about 4:10pm and asked her to phone an anaesthetist to ask whether propofol has an antidote. The anaesthetist replied that there was none, she said.
Later, the employee said, the female doctor found a defibrillator and asked her to call the manufacturer because it did not work. She said the call went on speakerphone, and at that point she saw Mazonakis lying with his legs raised while the male doctor attempted CPR.
“The panic was all on us, the workers, and the doctor’s daughter,” she said. “We called EKAB.” EKAB is Greece’s national ambulance service.
She also said the male doctor later told staff: “Mazonakis died, we are all jointly responsible.”
In addition, the Mazonakis clinic employee said that at about 8:45pm the female doctor, who was already at Kypseli police station, asked her to say the singer had arrived at 3:30pm.
However, she said she was not inside the treatment room the whole time and relied partly on two colleagues, whom she described as experienced nurses. She said she believed there was still a pulse at about 4pm and did not think the time of death was as early as 3:22pm.
The day before
The Mazonakis clinic employee said she last spoke with Mazonakis the day before his death. He arrived at 5pm and, after speaking with the doctor, chose to have only hydrotherapy, she said.
“He was fine, he was calm, he wanted the treatment,” she said. He seemed tired but cheerful, slept for half an hour and told her they would see each other the next day, when he planned to have an “Inus” treatment, she said.
The employee also said staff feared a machine used in treatments and did not know how it worked. “I was afraid of this machine,” she said, adding that the large amount of blood leaving the body scared her.
Additionally, she said an inspection of the practice in summer 2025 lasted about five minutes and inspectors did not enter the room where the machine stood.
Propofol is an intravenous anaesthetic used for sedation, according to the US National Library of Medicine. Greek City Times reported on 13 October that one drug has no antidote, an anaesthetist said, as investigators examine drugs found in the singer’s blood.
None of the Mazonakis clinic employee’s claims has been tested in court. No court has ruled on the case, and the investigation is continuing.
