Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has declared her intention to contest the deputy president position alongside President William Ruto in the 2027 general election, while also committing to run for the presidency in 2032.
Waiguru made the announcement at a women's forum, where she challenged the scepticism that greets female politicians who express ambitions for top national office.
"When a woman says I want a deputy president, it becomes a 'why' question. And even the other women say why? Even then they join to ask why? The question is why not? What is it that they have that I don't have? Other than one thing. Which journey have they walked that I haven't walked? They can mobilise, I can mobilise. They speak, I can speak. They have money, I have it as well. Whatever it is they can do, a woman can do," Waiguru said.
Waiguru Calls for Women's Political Coordination
The governor revealed she had reached out fellow woman leaders urging joint strategising ahead of the election cycle.
"We must sit down and strategise. These men will finish us. And they've identified me and you, and you know it. And the consideration is very simple. Is which formula will bring the win? Because we also understand it's politics. But let us be there. Let us be on that table," she said.

Waiguru made clear she intended to press her case at every available platform.
"I am fighting, and I will push to sit on that table. I said it in Kirinyaga, and I'll say it in every forum. I am also going to put my bid, if there's a bid, for the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. Because you shoot for the stars... You don't shoot anywhere, you land nowhere," she added.
Waiguru Eyes 2032 Presidential Race
Looking beyond 2027, the governor issued a firm public commitment regarding the next presidential cycle.
"I want to give this assurance and commitment. Anne Mumbi Waiguru will be on the ballot for President of the Republic of Kenya in 2032. Take that to the bank," she said.
Waiguru, who has governed Kirinyaga County since 2017, is serving her final term and is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election to the governorship.
Her declaration enters a competitive field.
Ruto's current deputy, Kithure Kindiki, is being backed by allies for a second term in the position.
Separately, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is locked in negotiations with Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over the 2027 ticket, with ODM insisting on the Deputy President slot as its minimum condition for any coalition arrangement.
